Has anyone seen this/tried this and have feedback?

I have totally hit a plateau so i want to try something new at the gym...I really would like to keep it at the gym b/c my kids get to run around and get excercise .. (live in an apartment so they don't have anything but a patio to play on)..

IAbout a week ago I stopped using the machines and am focusing on freeweights and resisitance training...

Thanks :O)

  • Machines are a waste of time and not very good for you. They limit your range of motion, and force your body in a specific motion that may not be natural for you. The best thing you can do is strength training using free weights and body weight movements (dips, chin-ups, pull-ups, push-ups). Combining that with at least a 30 minute walk works great. I do a lot of strength training and have learned a lot, and am still learning new things, but here is what I know so far.

Do not spend a lot of time with isolation exercises, and example of this is a the bicep curl. You want to do compound movements, these are movements that involve many groups of muscles. The four core strength exercises that do this are the military press, bench press, squat, and deadlift. Some other great upper body compound exercises are chin-ups and dips. It's important you learn to do them correctly, especially the squat and deadlift.

For most exercices, a few sets at 5 to 8 reps works best. The weight must be challenging, but not push you to failure. I see so many women in the gym doing good free weight exercices but using light weights, and they don't struggle with them at all. The weight should be heavy enough to be challenging, but not so heavy that your muscles fail. There is a great strength program called 5/3/1 from elitefts.com. You should research the 5/3/1 program and think about following it. Don't worry if much of the talk sounds like a bunch of muscle heads trying to get giant. It good for anyone who wants to burn fat or build large muscles. Keep in mind, girls really can't get giant muscles like guys can without the aid of testosterone.

Yeah, most of what you said is what the maxworkout deal is all about. Last night I looked up an ap on my phone and I used one called Jefit that suggests excercises but they aren't compound. Maworkouts also claims to "debunk" long bouts of cardio like no longer than 30 minutes and pushes interval training for cardio...thanks for he reply! I totally need to switch it up!
