How do YOU handle this??

Occasionaly I need to take a client to lunch & he always has the choice. In the past I've always ordered as sensibly as possible, but the place we ate today served nothing but fried foods! I looked for salad....there was nothing. I looked for a chicken type sandwich....& it was fried, etc, etc. I chose the thing that I thought wouldn't be to bad, but when it came it was loaded with cheese, even more than I used to eat before I came here. The potato type side dish with it was fried with some other stuff on it. I was kind of shocked to say the least. I've never been to a place that didn't have some kind of healthy dish or maybe soup. My question.......how in the world do enter the calories since it's not in the database. And how should I treat the rest of the day. I have my workout to look forward to but it will probably be only 600-700 calories today. Should I cut way back, or just act like it was a regular lunch meal?

I would do my best to manage the rest of my day. work out as usual. I wouldnt worry about 1 bad meal0

Call it a free day, forget it, and move on to tomorrow. Don't stress.0
-
Do your exercise, and eat something lite if you need it this evening.
And next time you pick, just because they are the client does not mean you can't pick a nice place to take them.0 -
i'd do my best in estimating using something in the database that was close to what you ate. As for the rest of the day, drink lots of water and try to cut back the rest of the day. Your work out will definately help. Remember, ONE bad day won't kill your progress, just make sure its isolated to today only.
Good luck0 -
There are a several different ways to handle this...but remember it's just one meal. You can cut back for supper and do the best you can, write it off and start fresh with the next meal. You can cut back a little all week to compensate for it and up your exercise a little bit. As far as entering in the database I just look for something as close as possible then add in things additional like guesstimating the cheese on it. It won't be exact but it will be better than nothing. Oh and drink lots of water.0

I'd react on multiple fronts: cut back a bit on calories later, work more if possible, and otherwise factor it into the weekly goal average. Life happens! A "bad" meal here and there doesn't mean disaster. Adjust where possible and carry on!0

Do the best you can the rest of the day, but do eat. One day will not ruin everything. If it becomes 3 days, a week and so on, yes. But sometimes it just cannot be avoided.0

i would treat it as a cheat day and enjoy it and maybe push a little longer or harder during exercise time.0

I've been able to make some close approximations to restaurant food just by searching out the ingredients.
Sounds like your typical southern restaurant to me!0 -
Enter your lunch one thing at a time, example: burger pattie, hamburger bun, slice of american cheese, etc. Just try to remeber what was on/in each item and approximately how much that way you still have a rough idea of what was put into your body calorie wise. As for the exercise, try to bump it up a little today by doing interval training( run 1 min, rest 2 minutes) to maximize your work out and blast more cals. Finally, try to recoup by eating a sensible dinner and snack tonight.0

Forgive and forget. This is not something you do every day so it is fine! Once in a while you will overeat and since you did your best to make a good choice. Just forget about today and move forward...0

I would do the same. If you want to try and add it in, look in the database for things similar to try to recreate the meal you had. But, if youcan't, don't worry about it. Try to eat healthy the rest of the day and chalk it up to experience. Only let the clients pick unless they pick something really bad for your diet. Then say "Oh heck no! We can't go there you fool!" (j/k, don't say that).0 -
I really hate these kind of situations as well. Happens to me every once in a while. Just make sure you put in a hard workout and make sure you don't eat too much during the rest of the day, DRINK A LOT OF WATER to flush out the meal and try not to snack.
If it was a lunch date, work out after work and make sure to have a light salad for dinner or some other subsitute.0 -
I'm no expert, just a regular guy but I wouldn't worry to much about it. Try to find the foods in the database that are best representative of your lunch today and account for it as best you can. Complete your workout like normal and eat a sensible dinner. You don't have to punish yourself b/c of one bad lunch but also account for it and try to make sensible adjustments. Besides all that, we are all trying to drop weight sensibly over time not all in one day so just keep moving on and making the right choices and working out and you will be fine. This is a marathon not a sprint. Also, maybe next time if a client makes a suggestion for lunch you don't like offer one or 2 other places that you know will have an option for you and say you had a "bad experience" at the place the client suggested and you would rather go some place different!! Good luck and keep up the good work!!0

You can still go out to eat, and thats a bummer that they didnt have anything healthy what-so-ever, but just be careful what you eat the rest of the day. Have a 300calorie dinner instead. For instance, a large salad with chicken breast, a light dressing, feta cheese, almonds, loads of veggies, is 300calories.
or maybe salmon and rice with a steamed veggie?
or chicken breast, roasted potatoes, and a couple veggies is under 300.
look at my blog i posted today for more meal ideas. feel free to ask questions.
in the last week i ate cake twice, went out to eat twice, and drank alcohol 3 nights, and still stayed in my calorie limit. and when i went out to eat I didnt go for the salad either.0 -

I try not to worry about 1 bad meal either. This lifestyle change is about managing overall habits. Additionally, even though it is the client choice - I wouldn't hesitate to mention that you have started making changes to your eating habits so that next time perhaps the client will be mindful of that when selecting a restaurant. You may even inspire someone else!
As far as recording the calories - I search for the basic item (hamburger, fries, etc.) and try to pick the closest match. If there is nothing that includes it all - I will search for each ingredient (beef patty, lettuce, cheese) and add them individually.0 -
pretty much what previous posters said, I tend to look at the cal count as a weekly whole and not daily, so long as you stick within the weekly goal you are good, you can spread it out over a few days or just suck up the one day and like they said 1 day will not hurt you.0

Have a big salad for dinner!!!0
-
Just something else to add in addition to the other posts already...
Next time you are in that type of situation in a restaurant, you can request they cook your food a certain way even if it doesn't specify that on the menu. If the menu says the chicken is fried, ask for it grilled, ask for the dressings/sauces/condiments on the side, request no cheese. Those are the things that usually contain the most calories in restaurants from my experience, and every place I have ever asked has done so no questions asked.0 -
LOOK THIS IS A LIFESTYLE CHANGE. AND IF YOU ARE IN BIS. AND HAVE TO TAKE CUS. OUT TO EAT THEN THAT IS YOUR LIFE STYLE ( SOMETIMES) JUST DO THE BEST YOU CAN. IF YOU TALK TO HIM OFTEN CLAME TO GET SICK AND HE WILL HOPEFULLY NOT PICK THAT ONE AGAIN. REALY LOG IT LEARN FROM IT AND FORGET IT0

and if this were to happen to me, id add it in the system as best as i could. tablespoon of cheese, fried potatoes in oil, etc etc.. its just a guess, but it will help you to see where your goals are at and what amount u need to burn off and what amount you have remaining for dinner. I personally dont think looking at the week on a whole would help me, because then id overindulge and get in the habbit of it, and fail on my diet. I look at it each day and have my goal for each day, and thats it. i eat 1800 a day, drink tons of water and hardly excercise at all, and im still losing.
PS DONT starve yourself tonight to make up for it, you dont want ur body to go into starvation mode or anything like that. You just need to work around calories. you dont need to eat light, u just need to find the best calorie match for what your goal is. if you only have 200 calories left, there is tons of full meals you can have without still feeling hungry afterwards for 200calories or under. DO NOT FRET IT! its ok!!0 -
I agree. You did your best to look for a healthy choice, you don't eat like that everyday, and you're still going to work out tonight. Just remember that loosing weight/becoming healthy is a lifestyle change. You're going to run into bad days, meals, weeks, etc. Just remember to not let it get out of hand and always hold yourself accountable for the bad! Put it in your diary!!0
-
Ok, here's my big question. Even though the client chooses, can't you politely state that you are watching what you eat, and the chosen restaurant isn't conducive to that? If the client is worth a damn, he/she would hopefully listen and choose elsewhere to eat.0
-
I would probobly just work out to give myself some wiggle room0
-
Have a couple of bites and then have them wrap it up,,,,,or better yet don't take it home!0
