30DS with 11lb weights - ouch!

30DS is meant to be done with 3-5lbs dumbbells, but my only pair are 5kg (11lbs). Oh boy, my first few goes HURT and I had no chance of completing all the reps (though I did keep doing all the lower body part).

I'm waaay too broke at the moment to get an additional lighter pair so I'm persevering. Now at L1D4 I'm most of the way there to completing all the reps. The last few squats with shoulder presses and the lunges with front raises elude me - but I can manage all the curls, rows and chest flies.

I spent most of last year laid up with damaged shoulder ligaments following a bad fall while out running, and I'm only now regaining my former upper body strength. I'm hoping that if I manage to compete 30DS using my weights, not only will I shred a few pounds, I'll have great arm definition (watching Terminator 2 for inspiration!)!

I'll be sure to check it with an NSV achieved as soon as I manage to do all the reps.

LOL, I can not even imagine trying that. Kudos to you!!!! I would be laid up in the bed for a year just for using the 11lb weights. hehe
  • I can't imagine using 11 pound weights. If you can't afford smaller weights right now, maybe you could use water bottles or cans of soup. Just an idea! Good luck.

dont strain yourself, you may end up injured, i have exactly the same weights as you, 5 KG, i used them for the first two days and felt it in my arm that i would end up injured. now i use a bag of rice (usually 1 KG) in each hand, which is pretty much the same as Jilllian uses..

Good for you!! I use 10lb handweights because thats what I had and I was not new to lifting when I started 30DS. After day one, it was my abs that hurt the most, now I'm not sore after a workout. It's amazing how your body adapts! Off to shred it now.:drinker:

    Keep up the good work!

    Thanks everyone!

I think I'll be OK if I treat it like a weight training session, in other words, I don't do it two days running (I do running in between) and stop when I reach exhaustion. If I feel I can't do any more reps, I drop my arms to my sides for the rest of the set but just continue the leg movements until the next set, by which time I'm rested.

Something's working as I'm wearing a sleeveless t-shirt today that used to be too tight round the arm holes!

Wow. I give you props with doing the shred with 11 lbs weights. I am also doing the shred with 3 lbs weights on L2D1. The 3 lbs weights feel so heavy some days. You will have a great upper body when you get finished. Make sure to show off pics when finished.
