polar f40 help please

i have just recieved my polar watch and set it up with my weight, height ect... Now i really am new to all this so i hope you dont think im silly but, can i just use the watch without the chest strap? or is it the chest strap that detects the heart rate? im really confused

The chest strap is to continually monitor your heart rate. With the HRM I have you do need to use it if you want to track Cals burned0

Yes, you need to wear the strap and the electrodes must be wet. You can wear it for time but that is about it w/o the strap:)0
