Dieting while still living at home... anyone else?

Currently, I'm trying a ketogenic diet and it's been working very well for me... I'm rarely very hungry for anything else after I have lunch.

However, it's kind of hard to turn down eating with my wonderful family and even though I'm eating food that fits my way of eating, what it comes down to is I'm eating when I'm not hungry and therefore not running my calorie deficit.

Are there any teen/early 20s MFP people out there that are having the same problem? It usually doesn't affect my losses, but today, I weighed myself and saw a half-pound gain. :(

Any tips for making family meals smooth sailing?

I know how that is. I just recently moved out of my parent's house, but when I was living with them we always had family dinners. If you have family-style meals where the dishes being served are right on the table where you eat, I have seen studies that say you will eat more. Ask if you can leave the foods on the stove or counter and that way you will be forced to stand up and walk over to get second helpings. Get yourself a smaller plate as well and you will end up taking less food.
  • It won't hurt to be polite and still sit in on the meals. Even if all you eat is two forkfulls. If you love your family and they love you, they'll appreciate the time you spend with them, and they should understand why you only eat a tiny bit. :) Cherish the time you have with your family! It won't last forever.
