I just got a hrm and usually if I do the elliptical for example, 30 minutes I will burn around 300 calories. Well I figured I'd buy a hrm to see if this was accurate or not. So I did the elliptical today with the hrm on and burned about 500 calories in about 40 minutes. I did take my heart rate a lot so it was accurate. My question is, does anyone else have a hrm and compare the calories burned against a machine. If its right, I didnt realize I was burning more than I thought.
And also, by the time I got home I had burned about 650 calories. Should I log all those calories in my exercise log....just asking..

Any input is appreciated! :drinker:

for example.......tonite I did a spin class for 90 minutes........I started my HRM when I got on the bike, and then stopped my calorie count after I cooled down and left the class.........1523 calories burned :) I wouldn't count the ride home, just the workout itself........ hope this helps ;)

I would only count the burn during the actual activity time. Also, you might want to deduct the amount of your BMR as estimated by MFP to make sure you don't over count your resting calorie burn. You can find this under TOOLS I think.

    I got a Sportline S7
works pretty good and it was cheap.(walmart)
So does everyone think the hrm is accurate, and I should count my 40 min workout as 500 cals burned?

I was just impressed with how many calories I was still burning after my workout, I did just log in the 500, thx for the input!

I always burn more than the machines say I do. I trust my HRM.

My HRM usually says I burned twice as much as my machine says so I normally go with the machine. I'd hate to over estimate and think I need to eat all those calories!

I would probably go with the HRM because I am always putting my heart rate on the hrm, the machine doesnt take it sometimes and I dont have my hands on the sensors all of the time either....
    hope its right

Ive heard of a lot of heart monitors - watches, rings, chest straps?????????????? which one is good and cheap but accurate?
  • I just got a Polar FT4, it has the chest strap. My trainer told me the chest strap is the most accurate, because it continually tracks your heart rate. I stop my calorie count after my cool down. Last night I burned 554 calories in my Zumba class, 1 hour.

I have a chest strap one....it works with the watch and the machines.

The machine says I burn less UNLESS I put my height, weight age data into it. Then it says I burn similar to what my watch says (watch is preprogramed with all that data). I picked up a polar from ebay....still going strong!
