Southwest Airline Seat policy

I will be taking a trip this fall and will be flying Southwest. I am curious if anyone here has ever been forced to buy a 2nd ticket because they were too big to fit in their 17 inch seats.
I am also using this as a motiviation to keep up with my daily goals on MFP and hoping my hip will shrink enough to comfortably fit into 17 inch seats.
I also wanted to ask if anyone out there know what hip size to fit just right into those 17 inch seats. The 17 inches are the measurement between armrests. I tried to find a seat in my home like that but I only have the rocking chair with 20 1/2 inch armrest. I am hoping to know what hip measurement i should have so I have a goal to get to that point within 6 months.

I weigh over 300 and have never had to pay for another seat. I just recently flew a few airlines going to Mexico and back from Washington state. I think you'll be fine! There were also people sitting in front of me that were bigger than I was and didn't have to buy another seat.
Either way, it is awesome motivation to try to be more comfortable and fit better in the seat! You can do it!0 -
If you have a dining room chair with arms, that is a good measure too.0

I flew Southwest in December when I was about 270 lbs, at 5'9" and my hips were measured at 53 inches. I fit fine. Hope this helps! Have a great trip!0

I'm so glad you posted this topic. I'm sure it concerns a lot of people. Do you know how long the seat belts are before using an extension?0

I think it's going to depend a lot on how you carry your weight. I am all hips and butt....and I found the seats and belt (no extender) quite tight. I fit....but I wouldn't have wanted to do a 6 hour flight seated like that. I was only doing a quite 50 minute flight so it was fine.0

when I was at 275 the belt didn't fit so I did ask for the extension.. they were very nice about it and it hard to ask but I did and no big deal was made about it..0
