Walking is boring.

So, I go on walks daily. I live in a small town, and therefore do not have many ways to vary my walk. I don't have an ipod, so to keep myself entertained I have been having lively discussions with myself about everything. I talk to myself about politics, life goals, books, movies, music, whatever comes to mind. I am a great listener, so I have no problems there. However, people have started thinking that I am crazy, because I am walking around town discussing the pros and cons of zip up shoes V.S. laces to myself. Does anyone have ideas on what I can do to entertain myself while walking?

Take a neighbors dog for a walk with you if you don't have one of your own. They're also great listeners.

I think some small media playing device would go a long way - doesn't have to be an ipod, can just be a cheap $30 2gb player from Walmart or something. Then you can load it with music, podcasts (a favourite of mine - they keep me very entertained when I am walking!), or even audio books.

Other than that, if you're musically inclined, maybe you can try making up some songs or jingles? You could ask a friend to go walking with you, and talk to them about politics, life goals, books, movies, music, etc. :)

Unfortunately it's hard to read and walk so I won't suggest bringing a book!

Get a cheap MP3 player with a radio built in.

Id really recommend getting an ipod/mp3 of some sort (they can be quite cheap). I find they really help me stay going. Personally I go on the treadmill at home and I find when im playing songs I really like i push myself harder and in the end feel so much better. Walking to a good fast beat passes the time so much quicker for me!

A camera and sign up for Project 365, where you take a picture every day for a year. It's a great creative challenge, especially if you have to look for new things in the same area.

A cheap alternative to an ipod is a little radio with ear plugs - there are usually just a few pounds to buy. Or, do you have a radio on your cell phone? Try just looking out for wildlife on your walks - even in towns there is usually am amazing variety. or, try and ask a friend to join you? Are there any organised walks in your area - they are a great way to meet like minded people who are only too happy to have a walking buddy. Some towns have rambler groups, or women only walk groups?

Perhaps in time you will get to appreciate the quiet time you have for thought and reflection while on your walk - it is a wonderful opportunity to just think things through.

Walking is only boring is you allow it to be - oh and perhaps you need a mission? Try and always combine the walk with a visit to the shops or to do something specific where you would otherwise use a car. I have walked miles just doing mundane things. If you have a purpose, you walk faster and don't have time to get bored.

    Happy walking.
