accepting friends

This maybe a weird question but i had a message in my email that i had a friend request....can someone kindly tell me how to accept a friend request?

    When you open the message it has boxes to click on , accept, deny, or ignore. Pick one by clicking on it. You will also be able to view their page (some of it) before you accept if you want.

    thank you for your help....however...an even more ridiculous question is...how do i get check messages? I have received emails saying i have friend requests but when i come in here to accept them it tells me i have no message.
