Insanity for Younger Kids

My 10 yo is doing insanity with me. He keeps up well and is doing great. No form problems. My mom was visiting and was all worried that he's somehow being "damaged" by intense cardio.

He's got 00 weight to lose and is clearly gaining muscle in his abs. I haven't tested, he's probably at 5% body fat. He works hard at it and he's dedicated. He also plays outside all the time, and eats really healthy. This isn't something that I make him do, it's something he wants to do. Both my kids have celiac disease, so eat very healthy. This child is a vegetarian. I'm not concerned about nutrition and eating right, we've got that covered well. Plus he grabs a protein bar now and then on top of it.

But from an exercise only perspective, am I safe to tell a worry wart grandma that he's not being harmed?

My 12 yo runs with me 2 days per week, and both kids are involved in the local track program. Plus they geocache, hike and swim and when the weather is good we run or bike 3 miles one way to school.

If you have concerns check with your doctor - but if your child is having fun and no one is makeing him do this I see no harm
  • Personally, I would tell her that being over weight and never exercising is unhealthy. As long as he is eating enough not loosing weight, I would think it would be fine. However, it never hurts to have the back up of a doctors opinion. I have a child with JRA and asthma, so I see the doctor a lot. So I am assuming you probably do to, ask the doctor just maybe he can give you some advice on when to be concerned.
  • I think it is great! My daughters ages 16 and 13 are very active as well but they would do Insanity with me.

I agree! My 3.5y/o could probably run circles around Shawn T.
