Women's New Balance HRM - HELP!!!

so for christmas i got the new balance women's hrm, watch with chest strap. i started using it and couldn't believe what a difference there was between the calories the machines said i was burning and the calories the hrm was saying i was burning - in 50 min the elliptical will tell me about 700 cal, the hrm tells me 500 or so. now i know i'm busting my @$$ when i'm working out, but i thought nothing of it, just carry on and go with what the hrm says. well, now i'm up to 6.0 mph on the treadmill and the hrm is going lower on my cal burn. i'm keeping my heart rate between 155-165 for at least a half hour, so how can the cal count be going down??

does anyone out there have this hrm? do you experience the same thing? and does anyone with a different brand hrm find that their cal burn is the same or close to that of the machine they work out on??

    I hope that doesn't happen to me because I just bought a new balance hrm yesterday and I haven't used it yet but I am going to later hope I don't have that problem or I will return it!

    my first thought is the elliptical causes your body to work much more than a simple treadmill ... although you may be moving faster there could be less muscles working therefore your burning calories slower .... I know if I walk on the street at a 4.0 mph pace and walk on a treadmill at a 4.0mph pace my calorie burn is always different just as well when i walk with no incline or i walk with an incline ....

    Just a thought but i do not know for sure!

    Because your body is becoming more efficient. Happens to all of us. Gotta go longer or harder to keep it up. ;) double edged sword, but good in the end...

    have you lost weight? the less you weigh, the less calories burned doing the same activity. try using a weighted vest, or change up your run, add sprints, incline, etc. Your body will adapt to an exercise, find the most efficient way to get the job done (burn the least amount of calories). So, I say, challenge yourself! Hope this helps!

    Your HR needs to be in a certain zone to burn calories efficiently. Mine for example is betwwen 116 and 146 (if I remember rightly). My HRM works this out based on age, weight etc so as you lose weight; your calorie burn zone will change. To burn fat your zone will be different and so it will be for stamina training. You perhaps need to change your initial set-up zone, or up the ante and add small runs and inclines as missyjmet suggested.

    Mine is the opposite - the HRM says I'm burning a lot more than the machines do... someone pointed out that the machines are normed based upon a particular body type - I forget what it was, but let's say for a plucked from air standard, a 150 lb, 25 y/o male. I still go by the more conservative number for my exercise calories I track.

    i do change up my workouts with different inclines, resistances and speeds. i also use the HIIT method, and pretty much want to collapse at the end of every workout, which is why i'm questioning the calorie burn. i have lost weight and that was based on what the machines were telling me. since using the hrm i've lost about 7 lbs. and i agree that the machines are probably not accurate for everyone, that's why i had purchased the hrm.

    i guess i just wanted to see if anyone else was having similar questions about this hrm or about any hrm in general

    are your batteries dying? try replacing them and see if your caloric burn increases. a friend of mine was complaining about her HRM doing the same thing, she changed her battery and it was back to her normal daily caloric burn.
