I'm hoping someone here can give me some advice on what I may have done to my knee today? I was cleaning the van out and climbing inside to get something under a seat and I twisted my knee and it felt like something ripped. It is swollen and bruised. I can limp on it but it is very painful even with the narcotics I take for chronic pelvic pain. I really don't want to go to ER because I have so much going in with health problems right now as it is. Any information anyone has would be wonderful!
Thank you! askamwho2

It may be that you have torn your cartelidge. Is it your knee or does it feel like it is under your knee cap (patela). Be very careful and don't eliminate the doctor just yet because you may need to go and get it seen to fairly quickly.

Do you have any walk in clinics? Sometimes those are cheaper then ER.

my advice? See somebody. Knee pain is a common problem and a big problem if not treated properly. If you dont want to see the ER then go to a personal trainer, physio or somebody who is better equipped to assess the problem for you than a gp.

I have knee issues, which are related to the tightness in my hamstrings. Knees can also be a problem if you are wearing the wrong footwear or there is something else wrong with you through your body, and it can suddenly be an issue with an incident like what you described.

Get it looked at accurately, there may be exercises to strengthen it that they can prescribe that will help in you not getting a reoccurance.

How much flexion and extension do you have? Which way did you twist your knee? Does it hurt to touch a certain part of the knee? all are helpful questions when dealing with knee injuries. It could be something that may heal on its own, or it may be something more serious that you would need surgery to repair. Hopefully it's the first one! knee injuries are never fun!!

not going to the ER is not to change the fact that you may have a serious injury - the sooner you seek treatment the sooner you will heal - go to the ER

To avoid a trip to the ER, make an appt with you Dr for a couple of days down the road and in the mean time, You could try rest, ice, and elevation for a few days, and a tensor bandage when your walking (try to stay off of it as much as possible) Use an anit inflammatory with your pain killers too. If it doesn't get better within 3 or 4 days you should be seen by the Dr.

    Hope you feel better!
  • Thank you all... kvr414-I have little movement but I can put small of amount of pressure when I walk, I twisted it to the right while it was bent and it hurts to touch but the worst pain is under the knee cap. I am icing and elevating now and it's still painful and I did take some mobic. If it's not better by morning I will make apt with gp. Thanks again
  • Oh and if it requires surgery this will be my 3rd knee surgery unfortanutely. The first two were arthroscopic to clean up under ineed cap from previous injuries.
