I am in need of a new pair of walking/running shoes. I get shin splints easy and have troubles w/ my ankles. I have asked my dr and chiropractor and no recommendations! Any help / suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

I LOVE my Runtones. No clue if they 'tone'--I wasn't doing anything before and now I am working out, etc, so don't know how much of the toning that has happened to attribute to the shoes--but even if they don't tone, they are still amazing--so comfortable and no shin splints!

try drawing the cursive alphabet with each foot a couple times each day, it should help with the shin splints

You should find a store that has a Brooks specialist because they can fit you with a great pair of shoes based upon your stride!

Asics are great. If you do any running, or are planning on including running, you are better off finding a good pair of running shoes rather than cross trainers or walking shoes. You can walk in runners but running in walkers isnt a great idea.
Spend as much as you can afford as well, you get what you pay for.

Since you get shin splints I would recommend going to a running store and having them fit you.
  • Find your local running store and get their suggestions made just for you. They will get you on a treadmill and see exactly what will be best for you. As far as brands go, look into Asics. I have a pair of GT 2150's and a pair of K-swiss Run 100's that I love.
  • There are lots of good brands - New Balance, Asics, Mizuno, Saucony... it's a very personal choice. I would recommend going to a running store where there are knowledgable sales people. Walking vs running shoes are quite different. Not sure where you are, Canada has the Running Room, in the US I don't know of any running stores specifically but Sports Authority is not bad.

I would highly recommend getting professionally fitted. It is free, and they can match you to exactly what your foot needs by monitoring your stride, etc. Getting the proper shoe for your foot type is extrememly important and something you won't regret. :)

I'm going to just recommend as the others have that you get fitted by a professional in a sport store. They really know what they're doing! Also, whoever recommended the "draw the alphabet with your foot on the ground" is absolutely right! My chiropractor told me to do that because when I started running I was having some ankle pain!

    Everyone's different!!!! Good luck!

The podiatrists that I work for recommend New Balance with a number higher than 600 or Asics. Good luck on your shoe search!
  • If there is a running store like Fleet Feet anywhere near you, you should definitely go! I drove over 2 hours to get to the nearest Fleet Feet and it was well worth the effort. I had shin splints too, and my new shoes made all the difference, plus now I know what to look for in running shoes.

Thank you everyone! I live in the middle of no where so I guess my next step it to find the nearest store to have them fit me and take a trip!
