Losing Ground

Got a weird thing going on... I've been walking same one mile trek around the 'hood for the past week. Everything was fine. Last night I decided to jump on the t'mill & get another mile in. Different shoes (New Balance 858), but similar speed, but the pain was crazy! Shin splints & toe pain, so I stopped. So today, I decide to head out for my walk outside, back to my "outside" shoes (Reebok Premier Road Plus) I got half way around the block & thought the dog was going to have to drag me home! The shin splints were awful. What is the deal?? Do maybe I need a day off from walking? I've been doing good with the pain up until today.
Am I the only one that seems to feel worse as the exercising continues? lol Seems weird, but I find this to be the case in several things I've done. Started Turbo Jam last week & started out struggling, but felt good, now it's torture! Instead of improving I feel like I'm getting worse. Please tell me I'm not alone! And what I can do to stop this, before I fizzle out.

I've found that I can do the exact same workout with the only changed is the time of day and it's like night and day. Normally, I hit the gym every morning and get on the treadmill for 45 min or so. I can do this every morning and be completely fine. A few times when I wasn't able to get the AM workout in and went instead in the evening after work, it was torture. Same exact workout and I was struggling. In talking to a few friends, they've experienced the same thing as well. Not sure if this is the case for you as well...

    Good luck!

Not really, because this is about the normal time I have been going.

You need to go see a doctor. Ouch!
  • I suffer from shin splints as well but only when walking on a hard flat surface. They don't hurt on hikes. I do wear my knee stabilizer thing-a-ma-bobs when I hike so they may be the reason. I have found that doing 30 minutes of stretching every night along with alternating between icing my shin and putting a hot pack on it has been a tremendous help. I overpronate when I walk and this seems to be the cause. Check on the web. I did find some sneaker suggestions for over or under pronators. Also taping your shin as athletes do may help.

I hope this helps & good luck!.

Sounds like your shin splints have been building up as you have re-introduced exercise into your life and have finally triggered. You should go and get a sports massage to ease them - my other half had the same problem. He had a sports massage done (tells me it was very painful at the time) but improved dramatically. After a couple of weeks rest from strenuous exercise he was fine and hasn't had a problem since.

    take care

Don't give up!. I didn't have the same thing. But I always seem to have a blister on my toes (painful when walked on), So everyday I have to stick these Dr.Scholl's molefoam Padding on both blisters, They never seem to go away. I've also had some other foot pain and would just walk slowly until the pain subsided & then I'd pick the speed up again. I usually walk through any pain but taking it slowly until the pain is gone. I continuely have knee pains and every day I wear my knee brace. I Love to Walk & I have to exercise So that's what I need to do.
Another Big thing when I first started walking was getting the proper sneakers to walk with . I wear saucony made for running. I couldn't walk with out them, I have two pairs.
I just hope what you have isn't more serious, I really don't know ? GOOD LUCK!!

I sure love walking and it is so therapeutic, but you are in terrible pain! I recommend seeing a doctor or an exercise physiologist.

Maybe it's time to mix things up for a while and do some other cardio that creates less impact on your legs.

    Hope the pain eases up.

Thanx everybody! I will give myself the day off today & see what happens tomorrow. I'll do some other exercise tonight. I have foot issues anyway, but they were getting better, man, it's always somethin'!

I always find that the first few sessions are the easiest, because I have the motivation! Then, once I know what is coming, I find that the workouts tend to be much more difficult, until I break through that wall. I cant explain it, but once I know how tough it is, I find it harder to keep trying. Then, when I get good at it, it becomes easier.
