Ok, so I love popcorn, and as long as you don't get the super-extra-movie-theatre-butter with extra butter, as far as I know it's not that bad for you.
But my questions is: what's the point of having the little 100 calorie bags, when if you look at the nutrition info on a regular size bag, it's like 90 cals for the whole bag (at least, the stuff I just bought is--35 cals/serving, 2.5 servings per bag). I'm so confused. How is a mini bag 100, but a regular size bag is around 90? Am I doing something wrong?

I LOVE popcorn as well... and I love the extra butter lol recently I have been buying the popcorn kernels, make them on the stove in a large pan... and i've gotten used to eating it without butter and salt :)
  • I would assume it's just an advertising technique.

100 calorie bags are marketed to people who
    a) aren't smart enough to check the other bags to see that any other popcorn has the same nutritional value
    or
    b) people who like the convenience of having a single serving at once so they aren't tempted to eat a whole bag if they pop a while bag.

Many 100 calorie snacks are marketed for these purposes.

Do you know that you can make it yourself for less cals in the microwave with kernals? It works out cheaper too.
Just put the kernals in a paper bag or a bowl with a lid (I just put a plate over a pyrex bowl) then turn it on for 3min. Turn it off when most of the popping has finished.
    mmmmm popcorn.....

Are you sure that that's not 35 calories per cup, five cups to a serving and 2.5 servings to a bag? Because that's the standard serving size/amount per bag of most large bags of popcorn (with calorie counts varying by type).

Ok so are you seeing that those big bags are like 2 or 3 servings per bag and the calories are per serving so if you eat the whole bag you are getting 2 or 3 times the calorie intake.

I just looked up one brand that says 2 servings per bag and 110 calories per serving. It was 94% fat free.

i know some of the pop secret 100 calorie bags are higher in calories per serving than larger bags because they use real butter (yum). not all microwave popcorn is created the same, regardless of bag size.

personally, i'd rather have the real butter and a smaller bag than a larger bag with fake butter flavoring.

i make my own, but I use a little vegetable oil to pop it. I put 1 tablespoon of the 50/50 butter on it and salt. It is definately worth it to me to have 2 cups of that and count it all. then just plain air popped. Everybody has different tastes and this is one of my splurges.

Best low-cal popcorn ever is the boy scout microwave stuff. It is called trails end butter light. It tastes really good, is low in calories, and supports a good cause.. ;)
