That rut I'm stuck in

I am sitting here wondering what the heck is wrong with me. I cannot get out of this rut. I am so unmotivated right now. I know I'll work out for a day or two, it will feel great, then I'm right back to where I started.

I know I've said before I don't have much of a schedule to follow, and maybe that's what's causing it. I know a big part of this is I'm constantly searching high and low for a job in my field, and having no luck. That's not helping the situation at all. I get so frustrated with the job search, which gives me no motivation to work out. I know I'm making tons of excuses here, but I just can't find the motivation, I don't know what it is.

I should be thankful I have all this time on my hands, but I just can't do it! I had big ambitions to make my own fitness plans, and I did, but today I spent the whole day writing up a new resume and delivering it in person to a company. By the time I got home I had to go the other way into the city again.

Just throwing this out there - if you have the time to kick me in the pants and say something that will get me moving, I'd really appreciate it.

Hang in there...the right job will come along and your life will settle into a normal routine. Until then just take care of yourself and don't give up...even a couple of days exercise is better than none and followed up by watching your diet will soon have you moving in the right direction. We are here for you...vent if you need to...just don't follow it up by a trip to the fridge.

This happens to me too. I get really motivated for a few months, then totally slack off telling myself I'll work up the motivation TOMORROW.

One thing that helps me is finding something new and exciting to begin, whether it's great new workout music on my ipod, a new workout video or equipment, a new gym class or diet plan - something that gets me out of the same-ol'-same-ol'. Good luck!

I lost my job when the business closed.. and I've been looking since. It's very depressing... the job market. BUT, I decided this was my golden opportunity to get myself together and take care of me. "ME" has been on the back burner while I took care of everyone else. This is ME time, and while I struggle with confidence... it feels good to have me time. That is not to say I dont have bad days... because I do. But I need to stay motivated... growing old as I am is just too scary. I still need to find a job, but at least focusing on me makes me feel more productive. I wish you much luck in the job market and on your journey to fitness.

I think the secret to maintaining a work-out schedule is to find something that you enjoy. For example, I salsa dance. I can get dressed up, socialize AND work out - sweat and all - with a bunch of other people who are sweaty, but happy. The music is great. It doesn't feel like a work-out. I also do weights. Why? It's fun? I actually enjoy it. But, there is no way I can stick to something that is work. I have to like it. There's got to be something out there that will do it for you. That's half the battle, in my opinion. Good luck!

I'm so sorry to hear about how you are feeling. I too have been going through the rut for the last 6 weeks. I'm coming out slowly this week. I finally just decided if I'm not getting it done, so be it, I'm not going to add beating myself up to my list of issues. Withing 30 min of making peace, my brain started planning and I swear to you I started working out again.

I agree that a new workout video or even walking plan might help. Another thing that used to work for me was doing the workout first thing in the morning. No time to procrastinate.

Let us know how you are doing.

I am in a rut, too. I'm finding it really difficult to stay motivated right now. I wish I had a solution for you...

But I'm trying to just be easy about it and not beat myself up. I got stuck around the holidays and I bounced back, so I know it's possible to get unstuck. There's a lot of crazy in my life and the weather is crap.

I know a lot of people on here are big on the "tough love, you suck if you're not perfect all the time" motivation, but that doesn't work for me. You have to find what works for you - we're all different.

ME TOO! I have been miserable these past few months, and finally decided to do something about it. I don't know how spiritual you are but I went on a modified fast were I just drunk "naked juice" and ate salad for a couple of days so I could clear my mind, pray, and figure out what was causing me such distress. At the end, I kinda had an emotional breakdown and it was clear it was my grad program that I am in that was blocking my success (I am completely unhappy and felt my professional goals weren't going to be met if I stayed in the program). So I have decided to leave at the end of the semester. Once I figured that out, I went and bought a pair of jeans (size 18, Im currently a 22) and put them front and center in my closet so I can see them everyday. I want to be in those jeans by summer (consequently the time I will move back home). It has given me more inspiration. I feel more in control, which could be the reason you feel stuck, since trying to find a new job can make you feel helpless. Hope this helps.

I know what you are going thru.My husband has been unemployed for 2 years.I just had knee surgery and am not able to exercise like I want. But I do what I can, which is do my home ex and follow my diet.Everyday you do something to get healthy is 1 day in the right direction.I know the weather doesn`t help me at times.Try to stay focused on your goals.Ask yourself,is what I`m doing getting me healthy or to my goals. It`s easy to get in a rut. It`s also easy to decide to quit or eat,but know you can do it if YOU want it bad enough.
    Good luck!!
