I was just wondering how I should go about traning for a marathon as a beginner its just a goal I would like to achieve so that one of these days I could run for my Mom who died of lung cancer over a year ago. I'm going to start running slowly since I haven't been active in a year. Thanks!

First...awesome that you want to train for a marathon!!! :drinker:

and second there are a lot of good programs out there, one that I used when training for a marathon many moons ago was at coolrunnings.com they have training programs from 5k to marathons....

I'm sure others wil have some good sites for you guys too!

This is a site my mom uses when planning her marathons, and she used it when she was starting back into running. She really likes the easy plans he gives.

She gave me this one too, and said it had some good advice on it. Good luck with your marathon!!! From what I understand, when you finish, it is such a great feeling of achievement.

I think the main thing when training for a marathon is time & consistency. They say you need at least 6 months to train from scratch and you need to be dedicated to run at least 5 out of 7 days a week, every week, building up your time and distance from week to week.

I did the Dublin City Marathon in 2003, I didn't follow the training program properly and I paid for it - it took me almost 7 hours to complete and I literally could not walk for about a week afterwards!!

But completing a marathon is a great feeling & achievement - good luck with the training!
