Do you think he's on to something, or do you think it is wishful thinking?

I don't so much think it is spot reduction as it is:

    1. The lower weight, higher reps that he is doing. If you read the book "Serious Strength Training" this is what is recommended in the Muscle Definition phase, which is used to get show ready for bodybuilders. It entails higher rep, low weight. High reps being 25-50 reps per exercises (or more), done in a circuit fashion, so that one performs 100's of reps per muscle group. Why? Continuously contraction muscle groups for that long of duration burns fat for fuel (since ATP/CP are used up rather quickly). It also involves recruiting more and more muscle fibers as the reps increase.

    2. Since he states he is a bodybuilder, it is probably good to assume that his body has adapted to burn fat much more efficiently than those of us who are more recreational lifters/just looking to drop weight (which he touches on in his article).

The bodybuilders of old busted their butts doing high reps to lose the body fat because that is what works.

    Just my thoughts.

He did say it wouldn't work for your average Joe. Only if your bodyfat is already pretty low, and you only have that little paunch left on the gut anyway. In which case, that is where you should lose bodyfat anyway.
