we went to a frozen yogurt bar tonight (which was *very* yummy). it's totally self-service: you go in, grab a cup, put your yogurt in and add any toppings you would like. then you take it up to the register, set it on a weigh machine, and someone rings you up. on the receipt it had a place to add a tip.
now, at a restaurant, i am a very good tipper - i usually tip at least $5, even on a 7 or 8 dollar meal. so i'm not stingy, exactly.
but i don't know why the hell they were expecting tips there. am i an old grump?
ps~we did tip $2. for nothing! but next time....

A lot of times, that line for a tip is just automatic on the machines.
Total self-service places, I don't tip. My latte place, I tip to the nearest whole dollar.0 -
Just curious -- when you go to a restaurant and just pick-up some take-out, do you tip? It would seem to be a similar -- if not the same -- situation...0

No tips required there. I bet they aren't even allowed to have that tip jar. Many MANY places like that are banned from earning 'tips'
Don't feel old or stingy, I agree. They don't need a tip. They are probably just feeling a pull on their pocketbook from the recession-like times we are in.0 -

In this case I would personally make a small one; simply because at restaurants I've worked at cooks get a share of tips.0 -
If it's completely self serve I wouldn't tip. At the coffee shop they get a buck AFTER I get my beverage (in case of screw ups). I tip depending on the service....good service they get a good tip (15-20% or more), bad service they get $0-$2 no matter what the bill is. Take out I tip if it is ready and hot when I get there...if I have to wait longer than they said I don't.0

The practice is to tip for to-go orders. I didn't know this until I worked at a restaurant (ironically, as a to-go server.) There is more work involved than people think.0 -
What about at buffets?0

hmm...I would decide for yourself...I wouldn't tip to high..you did all the work..but they probably have a bunch of underpaid employees keeping things stocked and fresh that could use a little boost. I tend to tip with a little change.0

What about at buffets?
At a bare minimum, you still have cooks, dish washers, bus boys, and host/esses; who are generally paid extremely low wages.0 -
What about at buffets?
I also wonder about this! I usually leave a few bucks but am never sure who it goes to.0 -
i don't do takeout ever, so i'm not sure about that.
i do tip at buffets.
thanks for all of the feedback!0
