Not fitness related at all. Car- title, tags, that stuff

Long story short the car my boyfriend bought 2 years ago never got put into his name. He has lost the title and now cannot get it switched into his name. Obviously because we don't have the title, the car is not tagged and has not been driven. We were told in order to get the title we have a few options. 1) We need to contact the guy we bought the car from. or 2) put out an ad for the car, price it at an unbelievably high price so no one will want it, wait 30 days, and after that we can then get the title. I'm not exactly sure how that works but that is what the tag agency said.
Well we cannot get a hold of the guy he bought the car from. And we cannot wait a month to be driving again either! So anyways my boyfriends uncle does a lot of business with the tag agency for his work (don't really remember what exactly he does) and he was able to get them to print out what they had on file for the guy who sold us the car. From what my boyfriend told me it has the guys name on it as the owner of the car, it has the Vin #, make, model, all of that.
My boyfriends grandmother suggested we try taking that paper back up there and seeing if they will just tag it. Then we would have the car "legal" (tagged) and can place the ad in the paper to get the title. And I remember my dad gave his truck to my brother and my brother was able to tag it without switching the title into his name. But then again my dad is Sr. and my brother is Jr. So I'm not sure if they just over looked that because of the same name or what.
But my question is, would that work? Can we go tag it like that?

I think ti depends on what state ( or country) you are in. Not sure, but I know from experience it is a pain. We had a similar problem, but we knew who we bought the car from, they just didn't have a title and we went through a mess trying to get a new one, never did so we had to give the car back to them. Crazy! Good luck!0
