Sore today, should I go at it again?

I'm on a 6 day stretch off of work so I plan on trying to do something everyday. I love how I feel when I exercise and I love knowing that I am doing something good for myself.
Yesterday I did just about 40 minutes of Zumba, then to cool down I did 20 minutes on the Wii Fit Plus (Boxing, Cycling, Rhythm Parade and a few others). Ate dinner and then after dinner went on a 3.0 mile walk with the dog at a brisk pace. I wanted to turn around so bad at the half way point. But I'm glad I didnt. It felt good to do the whole thing. Normally our dog walks are just about a mile. Im sure the dog is pooped too.
Anyway, my question is, should I go at it again today? I have to be careful because I have a herniated disc in my back. So I need to do low impact exercises anyway. I just make sure to do them long enough to benefit from what Im doing. I'm so sore this morning. Is a day of rest better or going right back at it better?

If the soreness isn't in your back then I say go for it. Most people never really get over muscle soreness (something that Chalene Johnson talks about in her Extreme workouts). IF your back starts to act up, STOP!0

Listen to your body. You should have a day off to allow muscles to repair. If you really want to do something just do a walk.
Well done for yesterday, that was awesome0 -
I deal with some sort of back pain on a daily basis. One day its fine, the next it hurts like a *itch! Today its sore. But not any worse than a typical day. And I've found that when I am up and moving its not stiff and feels a tad better.
As for the muscle soreness. I remember when I was in boot camp for the Army and was sore everyday and you just pushed through it. Then again you were like herds of cattle and they drove you to the point where you thought you couldnt return. But you did. I wish I could have that body back.0 -
Great job! I have to start by saying I have read you NEED to rest the muscle you have used for 24-48 hours. So you did a lot of cardio, you will now need to work upper body and core. I went HARD my first month and worked out everyday for a month. My ankle hurt so bad and I was exhausted. Now I work out 5 days a week and one yoga/stretch day. My ankle no longer hurts and I can really push it when I get to the gym. I understand you want to go hard but slow and steady wins the race!!!!!0

The old adage "train don't strain" applies to all of us. I do something every day, but I also try to vary most of the muscle groups to give a particular set of muscles time to recover before working them again. Basically, I am finding that doing some form of cardio everyday (mixing up fast walk, jog, cycling, etc.), and then every other day, work a different set of muscle groups for strength, helps me maintain a good, healthy feeling. It is good that you are doing different things, I would just keep the variety and "listen" to your body; when one set of muscles is crying out for a little rest, give them a break that day and work a different group.0

Thanks. It doesnt seem like I did a lot. But it sure did feel good. I dont think we will get a walk in outside today. We got dumped on with snow overnight. :sad:0

Thanks guys. Perhaps today I will skip Zumba and do some of the strength exercises I remember from boot camp.
Do any of you use Kettle Bells?0 -
Pity about your back; shovelling snow is a great workout. Take it easy0

The snow can wait until the hubby gets home. That would KILL my back. Its the heavy nasty stuff too.0

I have to agree with the consensus here - take a long walk or do Pilates or Yoga or something else for a day to let your muscles take a rest.:flowerforyou:
Also, I thought this might be of interest to you
I was reading a magazine last night. An article about overdoing the exercise caught my eye since it is a topic of conversation I see on here. Not to mention am feeling a little soreness myself from my 30 day Tae Bo challenge. It basically said that spicing your meals with a little less than a tablespoon of grated GINGER each day might be enough to reduce muscle pain from exercise. In a study participants that took the ginger had about 25 % less pain than those that did not. It said the findings show ginger might block pain receptors and actually inhibit inflammation. It recommended sprinkling ginger into fruit salad or adding it to stir-fry. I thought a little ginger added to a smoothie might also be tasty. Personally, I know the GingerAle commercials seem to be more frequent on tv and I am not much of a tv watcher but I have even noticed them and they are toting the benefits of ginger as well. Something to think about....0 -
VERY interesting! Thank you for sharing. And if it helps with swelling then it may also help with the inflammation around my herniated disc. Thank you soooo much!0

Thank you all for your suggestions? I took it easy. Did 20 minutes of free step on the Wii while I watched my favorite show. I figured I might as well do something while I watch it instead of sitting on my butt. I love that feature with the Wii Fit. I can exercise and still watch TV. WHOOT! Then I did a little strength training.0

I was just going to tell you that you might want to do a light workout as it can ease your back. I, like you, have some sort of back pain everyday and I totally wrecked it a few weeks ago, like could barely stad up straight. I took a few days off and it got no better so I did my 30 Day Shred DVD and wow it made it feel so much better. I modified some exercises but I was amazing how good it made it feel. So jsut judge how it feels and do stuff accordingly.
We got a dump if snow too. I'm not very happy about that!0
