Hi Everyone!
So I have my first 5k coming up in 3 weeks! I am pretty nervous, but excited at the same time. I had a couple questions for anyone that has done a 5k before.
Do you usually run the day before?
What do you eat the night before?
What do you eat the morning of the race?
How much water should I drink before the race?
Any info anyone can give me would be great!
Thanks all!
xo

I personally don't run the day before a race and I eat something that I know isn't going to be too heavy on my stomach the next day. I once ate Mexican before and was in misery so I stick to pastas or grilled chicken and rice. I cannot eat before running, but my friends I run with will have something small--like a granola bar, small bagel... And with water, just stay hydrated the day before and drink a little before the race. If you do too much, it might actually cause problems. A physician who is an avid runner spoke to our running group and said just don't do anything different on the day of the race that you have been doing while training and that's been the best advice I have ever gotten. Good luck to you!0

I just did my first 5K but my wife has done a ton, so here are my thoughts:
I do not run the day before.
The night before isn't that big a deal since a 5K is still fairly short. No need to carb load.
The morning of, I DO want carbs. I had a bagel with cream cheese.
Don't overload on water before the race. You'll cramp up. I ran with a 20 oz bottle of water and just took little sips when I needed them. There were also water stations along the route if you don't want to carry a bottle.
Just focus on having fun and finishing. Don't overthink things. You'll do great!!!0 -
I just ran my first 5k this past weekend.
The night before we had a light dinner, we bought an Organic Pizza and I had a couple of slices.
I didn't run the day before. I ran less than half 2 days before.
The morning of I got up early to eat my normal breakfast and to stretch and to let everything settle.
I didn't drink any water before, but probably should've.
Do make sure you warm up and don't do like I did and leave your iPod at home. It sucked running without music.0 -
hope your 5k goes great. :-} never ran one, so i dont have any advice....0

If you want to run the day before, you can but just do a short distance and run easy.
For a 5K you don't need to carbo-load, eat whatever you would normally eat but nothing that's going to affect you the next morning!
In the morning, eat whatever you would normally eat before a run.
Drink water before the race but not too much, you don't want a bunch of water in your stomach while you're running, and you don't want to have to go to the bathroom. Drink the water about a half hour to an hour before you run, not immediately before you start.
It's important not to try new things on race day!!
Good Luck!! And most importantly Have Fun!!!0 -
thank you everyone for the info and encouragement. you guys are the best! and congrats to all who have completed 5ks (and other races) in the past!

I typically do not run the day before the race. I want my legs to be rested and ready to go. I tend to do better in the race when I do this. The night before, don't try a new food, you don't want your stomach upset before or during the race. You don't necess loaarily need to load up on carbs the night before. Just eat a regular, familiar meal. As for the morning of, I usually eat a bowl of oatmeal and a cup of coffee but some people stay away from the coffee before. I have to have it:) Don't drink a whole lot of water before, you don't want to wet youself during the run. You can drink plenty of water the day before and still be hydrated. Hope this helps, GOOD LUCK!!0
