I'm new to the whole counting calories thing, never had to until I had a baby! lol. I'm doing well thus far, lost 17# so what I'm doing must be working!

I have a specific question about counting calories using a measuring cup v.s. food scale. So which are you supposed to use??!! For example: I wanted to eat 1/2 C brown rice. So I measured the cooked rice using a measuring cup.... but when I put it on the food scale, the measured rice only weighed 2 oz. ??? Doesn't 1/2 C = 4 oz.??? Help!

You can't compare cups to oz because it despends on the weight what you're measuring.

For instance, a half a cup of feathers would weigh a lot less than a half a cup of lead. It's still a half of a cup no matter which you're measuring, but the oz would be significantly different.

Unfortunately, in the English system of measurement we have a volume measure of ounches ( 8 ounces to a cup) and a weight measure of ounces (16 ounces to a pound). These are as different as night and day. 4 volume ounces does = 1/2 cup, but what this weighs is an entirely different story. Think about 1/2 cup of lead weights which might weigh a pound and 1/2 cup of puffed rice which might weigh only 1 ounce.
