HRM for Swimming

Hi all,

So I have been forced to make swimming my primary means of cardio due to my bad knees. When I started out I was going pretty slowly so I felt just using the calorie counts on MFP for slow pace was fine for me to track my exercise cals. Now I am getting faster/better at swimming and I would like to buy an HRM that I could use while swimming to find out exactly how many calories I am burning. Does anyone know of a good HRM for swimming? I have done a few searches on the board and it seems consensus is that the polar models are pretty effective. Does anyone know of which model in particular? I'd hate to spend a ton of money on an expensive model and then not have it work in the pool! I am not diving or anything–just doing laps/kicks etc. Thanks!

I have the FT4. I use it in water aerobics class and burn around 373 calories in an hour.

    Weight: 195lbs
    Height: 5'7

hey msproducer-has the FT4 ever given you a problem in the water? I was thinking that one as well since it won't break the bank. This may sound like a stupid question but is the HRM under water at all during aerobics?

I've never had problems with it. The watch is waterproof and works fine when I get out, and the strap stays in place while I workout. It was 89.00 at ****'s Sporting Goods with a $10 mail in rebate. When I looked on Amazon, it was around the same price at the time that I bought mine.

I would make sure you get feedback from a lap swimmer...I have a garmin that is waterproof etc but read lots of reviews that it was ok for being in the water but that if water "flowed" under while doing laps it wouldn't take readings...just double check specifically for your purpose
