Stop Retaining Water by Drinking More!

I took an excerpt from an article that I read because I've seen a lot of people telling others that they are drinking too much water and I didn't believe this to be true so I researched myself.

"...another way is to take your weight and divide it in half. This is a "baseline" amount of ounces to drink every day. For every cup that you drink that is not water, drink a cup that is water. For every bout of exercise, drink a cup before and after, and one extra cup for every hour that you exercised (round up!). That's it.

Let's use an example. If you weighed in at 200 pounds, 200 / 2 = 100 ounces of water, or about 12 cups. Let's say you also ran on the treadmill for 30 minutes. One cup before, one cup for the exercise, and one cup after is three cups total. 12 + 3 = 15 cups.

You also drank two cups of coffee, so you should have two extra cups of water. 15 + 2 = 17. That's it - today's optimal water consumption for you is 17 cups!"

I have heard the 1/2 body weight in ounces for water intake. I had not heard the cup before and after exercise, or the cup for every hour of exercise. I have also heard tales of water intoxication and the dangers of it. I think this is something that can also be individualized. :drinker:

LOL I've just done mine and it comes out at about 9 cups of water (or about 72oz), and I drink quite a bit more than that. My mug holds near-on 15oz of water and I drink about 7 of those in a day. Only think is unless I'm working out I cannot bear cold water so I tend to drink 3/4 hot and then a top of cold. Goes down so much more easily...!

Interesting to see the equation though!

I sweat immensely when working out so I have recently realized that I needed to up my water intake. Drinking 2 liters was no problem for me but since I have doubled that I was able to release a lot of fluid that I've been retaining and my lips don't need to be moisturized as often.

Thank you for the info. I've heard similar things as far as amounts of water go. I have a book called Your Body's Many Cries for Water which is interesting but a bit of a technical read.

One thing I've been wondering is how much water it's ok to drink at one time? I'm doing Clean Eating (as much as I can) and Tosca says, in her Clean Eating book, that she drinks 1000 ml (just over 1 qt) of water first thing in the morning and then 500 ml with each meal. I drink 3 qts a day and so I started drinking my 1st qt all at once and then started drinking the other 2 quarts one quart at a time (one upon waking, one in the early afternoon and one in the late afternoon/early evening. I liked doing that because I noticed that I didn't have to go to the bathroom as much during the night but I have concerns that drinking a quart at once is too much at one time.

Does anyone know how much water it's ok to drink at one time? I'm sure 16 oz is probably ok but have my doubts about a qt. I did some research on Water Intoxication and found that it's generally from drinking very large amounts of water at once - much more than a quart but I still wonder if it might not be a good idea to drink a qt at one time.
