So Strength training doesnt help burn fat....?

There should be some way of logging the positive effect of strength training has on a fat loss programme.

It burns calories and speeds up the metabolism for a far longer period than cardiovascular exercise.

Why doesn't myfitnesspal build this into what is otherwise a really useful programme?

You can add it in..under cardio exercise database they have strength training. I add it all the time to my cardio in order to add the calories...because I am going from exercise to exercise back and forth no stopping..and sweating and heart is beating fast..so I totally agree with adding it in.

I believe its minimal until you get to a certian point. It would be diffrent for everyone depending on how you gain muscle where you gain musle, and your workouts. Seems like it would be to complex.

I agree I spent all morning looking for that.

I worked out very hard this morning for an hour strength training and came to MFP, and boom, I was surprised I burned no calories.

    YEAH RIGHT :grumble:
  • What PP said..you can log strength training under cardio

Enter "strength training" in the cardio section for an estimate of calories burned.

Hey msbenjamin...Your answer was already given. Under the cardio section, search "strength", then enter your time to log the calorie burn. The bottom section is so you can log more detail if you want.

I add my training with weights under cario because I do circuits or intervals. I have not done a split routine workout in a long time.

I use a HRM specifically for this reason. I do a 25 minute cardio run followed by weights. I can burn 900 calories/hour this way...

This is far higher than the 400 logged for the cardio alone.

The reason it is not logged as part of the tools on MFP, is due to the complexity. When you HR is in the 160 + zone, calories fly off... This happens with heavier weights, lower weights don't raise the HR as much...

It does help to burn fat, but it is much harder to really calculate the calories burned... I try to look at it as bonus calories burnt... I don't calculate it in cardio, but simply consider them a bonus to whatever MFP says I burned. I know there has been a lot of conversation/controversy on this as an issue, but really I think just do what works for you. I choose not to count them, other people do. To each their own.

Thanks for pointing out the 'strength training' in cardio exercise...
but 267 calories for 60 minutes serious compound lifting?MFP tells me I burnt more calories during the warm up run... I think not.
I appreciate it's difficult to quantify because of the variables (although one person's circuit training can be soooo different to another's, even when they're doing the same class....;-))
So an HRM is probably the answer.
But it could mislead beginners into thinking that strength training doesn't count for much in fitness training and fat loss - or worse that it's just for muscle busting males...

If you were doing your workout in a circuit enter it as circuit training instead of strength training as strength training would assume resting between sets.

I am living proof that eating back your calories works. I lost 30 pounds in 60 days and it was ALL fat. Your body will thank you 10 fold if you feed it what it needs.
