OK MFP people! I just signed up for the TC10K run. Any tips on how to train for a 10 km? I'm a newbie!

I'm also training for a 10K in July. One trip from me - get good trainers and replace them when they are warn out. It will make a massive difference to how tired your legs feel - I was actually getting pains in my shins before I replaced mine: and from teh outside they look in good shape.

If you google 10k training plans - there are tons that you can print out for free and follow.

Congrats and good luck on your run!

Look up Hal Higdon's website. He provides well regarded, free training plans for specific distances and experience. How new are you, a 10k might be ambitious if you haven't been running very long. Regardless, good luck and have fun!

I've been going to the gym for the past 6 months or so and usually run 5 km when i do outdoor runs, longer on the treadmill.

I'll start googling some ideas, but if anyone has any great tips, please share :)
  • I'm using this one:

My first 10K is in a little over 2 weeks. I started the training program a little early so I actually just did a 10K training run this past weekend. When I started I was pretty comfortable running 5K and this really worked for adding distance.

My only tip would be to try to do your long runs outside, not only is it more enjoyable, but it will better prepare you for race day.

I hope your training goes well!

HH is a very very good website for training tips. I recently finished the modesto 1/2 marathon and followed HH's training regimen with great results....good luck!

One hint - if you do a 10K run make sure you eat enough afterwards otherwise it takes ages to recover.

    Ran 10K + 30min Xtrain on Wednesday -

    Goal: 1480
    Food: 1772
    Exercise: -1210
    Net: 562

    Remaining:918

Took yesterday off training (net 60 Cal over)

Went training today and felt rubbish - everything was such hard work. The guy who works at the gym said I should have taken some protein & carb supplement after my Wednesday session (within 30 minutes of completing the training) - Or at least eaten in real food something similar.
