So, somehow last week I hurt my neck. Don't ask me how. I basically went to sleep and woke up with what I thought was a stiff neck. Well, I was wrong.

Its now been over a week and I have trouble turning my head more than maybe 90 degrees in front of me. I can turn it 100% parallel to my right side with just a little pain, but turning to the left is extremely painful. The girl has been great with neckrubs/shoulder rubs to try to help but its just getting annoying even though I'm starting to get used to it.

Anyone ever experienced anything like this?

I woke up with that last weekend and its taken me all of this week to get it all worked out. I even had a friend thats in Massage Therapy school try some deep tissue on it and it helped a little with range of motion but not as much as I'd thought. Have you tried either heat or ice or both yet?

I have this happen every now and then. It is almost like a kink in my neck when I wake up then I go to turn and bam...pulled muscle in my neck. I feel your pain, it just takes time to heal itself.

Not yet... don't really have a source of either. Maybe I should look into a heating pad? Standing in a shower won't help since I lose hot water after about 10 minutes, heh. It gets better and worse throughout the day, usually its the worst in the morning, then when I'm active it gets better. Then near the end of the day it starts tightening up again.

I know this sounds kind of stupid, but try sleeping without a pillow for a couple of nights. My neck kinks up like that once in a while, but then I sleep without a pillow for a little while, and it feels TONS better. Just an idea.
  • Yes me i had a pain in my back once i thought i may have slept wrong so i left it for a week i ended up in hospial one morning i woke up during the night screaming in pain we had to call the ambos i could not move it turned out to be i had pulled all the musals in my lower back i was unable to walk bend over or pickup anything heaver than a mug of coffee for 3 months  so i recomend that you see a doctor bout it its better to be safe than sorry
  • I try to avoid drugs, but in this case i'd suggest ibuprofen, or another form of anti inflammatory. I hurt my lower back once, was hoblin around for a week before i took anything, after some pills and a few hours i was almost sorted.

Without seeing which way you can or can't turn your neck it's hard to say which muscle is the culprit but if it's your run of the mill crick in the neck then its that darned levator scapula...it has a natural twist in it so it's easier to kink. If you pulled something then it could be quite a few different muscles surrounding the neck. I'm not sure if you are at home or office but if you don't have an actual heating pad or ice pack....a bag of frozen veggies can work for you in a quick fix. Icing it will help take away some of the inflammation and the heat will relax it...it's good to alternate with breaks in between.

I have had that happen before a couple of times. I ended up going to the chiropractor. He said my neck was out and the longer it stays out the more your muscles will have spasms. Eventually your body will kinda adjust but when your neck finally does get back in alignment your muscles will want to try to go back to how they were before it was adjusted, which then leads you keep going back to have your neck alligned. All in all, I learned it was way easier to just go have it adjusted right away, when one part of your back is out(if that's what you have) then it eventually makes other parts of your body hurt. Vicious cycle:grumble: Good luck:happy:

Alright, I'm going to try sleeping without a pillow for now, maybe that will help. If not and this doesn't go away within the week I'm going to have to talk to a chiropractor I guess :(

I hate taking meds as well, I usually solve most of my issues with exercise and vitamins. First time I've really had a physical issue like this.

I have not had to take any meds when getting my neck alligned, usually it feels better-sore, but better and something like icy hot or a mineral rub gets rid of the soreness, which lasts for a couple of days. If anything, I took some ibuprofen, nothing prescribed.

I'd be careful and take it easy for a few days. I had this happen to me not too long ago. I woke up to sharp pains running down my arm and back along with my neck stuck in an awkward position. Everytime I would move, it would send pain everywhere. I later found out i had almost a herniated disk in my neck and my neck was starting to go in the worng direction. I would go to a chiropractor and just explain what the situation is and they should be able to help you. I hope this was helpful in anyway, and I hope you feel better :flowerforyou:

I had this happen. Horrible pain. Also increased frequency of migraines for me. After 4 or 5 days, I couldn't stand it anymore. Went to my doc, they gave me muscle relaxers (to allow the muscles to gently come out of the 'kink') and an anti-inflammatory (for whatever purpose those serve). I used a neck heating pillow (the wonderful kind you nuke in the microwave for 2 minutes and the heat lasts for 30 - 45 minutes). After two days, I was feeling much better.

If you are going for a heating pad try to find one with moist heat it works so much better (kind of like the shower) get the neck pain at least every 4 months (mostly from sleeping wrong) :flowerforyou:

Excedrin! Lay on the floor with a rolled up towel under your neck. Find someone to rub your neck, back and shoulders.

I finally got over my kink, which lasted for almost a month. I think I got mine from sleeping on the couch with my head and neck at such an awful angle. Plus I was snoring as loud as an airplane engine. That didn't help!

Chiropractor visits here is South Dakota will run around $40, then it also depends on what they do.
$40 gets you electronic stimulation on your neck (and other places where you are experiencing pain--shoulder, lower back etc.) and also the chriopractor will rub down and allign your whole back--sometimes with neck problems it also causes tension headaches, so he or she may also give your sinus passages, temples, forehead etc. a rub down also. If you haven't been to a c. at all there may be "new patient" costs. That seems like bologna to me:happy:

I actually had this happen when I was like 7/8 years old. I couldn't even sit up. I ended up going to a chiropractor, and he must have adjusted my neck, but all I remember is laying on his table and he grabbed my head and snapped it to the left and to the right. I had to use an ice pack for a few days after that, and then a heating pad for like a week. I've since had back/neck problems, (they run in my family) and I've gone to the chiropractor a lot. They're amazing. Just do your research and see where a good chiro is by you. Also, check with your insurance. Some will cover the chiro, and others will cover it if you get a referral by your regular doc.

I agree with the advise above. I do this every year or so. Usually it goes away in a couple of days, but if not I have to go to the Dr. and get some muscle relaxants. Works amazingly well!
