Exercising when sick

So I have had strep. The first day I knew I was coming down with something, but not sure what and since we were planning to go out to dinner that night, I made sure to get 2 workouts in. Wow! My body hurt SO bad. The next day I was to sick to move, much less workout. But now I'm on the path to recovery. Should I try to workout anyway, even though I'm not yet well? Does "healing" burn any calories?

I've read that you shouldn't worry about exercising while sick because your body needs that energy to heal, I don't know about calorie burn for healing but when I was sick for almost 3 weeks, I didn't do any exercise and I didn't have any ill effects from it, I still maintained my loss and I was able to go back to my exercise without any backsliding...Feel better soon!0

Strep, yuck. I have been sick for three days and working out is the last thing on my mind. If I were you I wouldn't worry about working out. Track your calories and drink a ton of water. Your body needs to rest when it is fighting a cold. I am not an expert, that is just my opinion. If you push too hard you may delay your recovery. Feel better soon!!!0

i've heard that if its above your neck its ok to work out..if its below (chest) dont work out.
i think for the most part if you dont feel up to it for a few days its ok. you wont destroy all your hard work in a week. and its actually good for a body to rest now and then.0 -

What about the cheetos and soda....? You know, to help the sore throat. :laugh:0 -
I think the above/below the neck rule is a good one to follow. I was sick last week, just a sinus infection, but the mucus running down my throat into my lungs made just walking up and down the stairs enough of a hassle. Since when you work out your body requires more oxygen I'd really try to take it easy until you feel almost better.
Hehe, and no, cheetos and soda aren't sick food, but good try though! Feel better!0 -
I'm thinking I'll start out with 30 minutes of walking instead of Jillian's 30 day shred. Get back into it slowly for a few days.0

I had strep 2 times since starting p90x and I only missed one day of workouts each time. But I think you need to go off of what you body says. If it says no then do not push it. For me I was and still am determined to not miss my exercises but I should have skipped one more day the last time I had strep. Feel better.0

I am a firm believer in sweating it out. My grandmother (who turns 82 today) always threw me outside and told me to go sweat out my cold. I mean I definately don't push it to the max or even halfway mark, but I believe in doing something. Get better soon!0
