I'm thinking of signing up for this years race for life in june, its 5K round a field, you can run/walk or jog. I've never done this amount in one go but I think from now untill then I should be able to set a goal of being able to jog the whole thing!!!

As I've only just started my diet/exercise journey is this a little out of reach for me?

My neice has asked If I want to do it, but she is not in any shape to be able to jog it! I'd have to do it alone....

Do any of you think its do able for me?

Hi there, Firstly congratulations on making a start and looking for those achievable goals.

Last year (without too much training), I completed the Bridge to Brisbane 10km Run.. It wasn't the smartest move, but I had been saying I was going to do with for about 12 months and so didn't want to go back on my word. I completed it in 01:21:35 (http://tiktok.biz/bridgetobrisbane/2010/34162/)

Now why did I tell you this? Quite simply, when I do something I tend to push myself to a point where I don't train and end up injured and as opposed to doing the sensible option of going for the 5km, I chose to do the 10km (male, ego etc etc) I spent the next 3 days hobbling around with sore everything.

You can walk 5km today. Trust me, you can. It's not as long as you think and remember you do this at your own pace. If you walk it with a group of friends, you will enjoy it. Even at an average slow pace 5km will take between 35-45 minutes, so it's not as far as you think. Now if you want to jog or run this - then take your time to train correctly.

Do interval training - walk - jog - walk - etc.. Just short bursts to begin with, don't try and push yourself too much too early, you don't want injuries. Here's a link to an article that may also help: http://ezinearticles.com/?How-To-Run-Your-First-5-Km&id=642600, plus the Couch to 5K website (http://www.c25k.com/)..

First Step - SIGN UP to Race for Life - commit yourself to doing it and even if you aren't up to a running/jogging 5km pace or speed by the time - remember nothing is stopping you walking it...

If you need any advice or anything further - feel free to drop me a note.. And add me as a buddy..

Best of luck and remember - it's only a mindset - you can achieve what you believe in...

I highly recommend the couch to 5k program. It takes a total of 9 weeks, so depending on when in June your race is, you may or may not be able to complete the program before then. Regardless, if you can't run the whole 5k, you can always walk for part of it and nobody will think any the less of you.

I finish couch to 5k this week, and have signed up for Race for Life in July. The best of luck to you!

I'm starting c25k on Monday and am also thinkingabout signing up for the race for life. You guys have given me the confidence to just go for it. Stop thinking about doing it and just do it. Even if I do end up walking most of it, it is still better than nothing, eh?

I completed the race for life last year, I didn't jog, I hula hooped all the way round. You can do it! If I can then anyone can. =)
