I had my BMR calculated and I was told I had to consume 1467 calories a day to lose a lb a week. Wow could this be right?
On here my calories are 1200 and I usually dont even eat that.
My other question is... If I stay within my calories does it matter if its a piece of pizza or chicken? lol

  • Not at all! A calorie is a calorie, granted you should give your body the nutrients it needs the majority of the time, but it's perfectly fine to fit the not so fantastic stuff into your diet in moderation. In fact, that's what keeps it from being a "diet" and makes it a healthy lifestyle change. Check your settings too, make sure they are all set up correctly for what you want goal wise. You should be eating at least 1200 calories a day.

I know MFP puts 1200 for some people, but a lot of nutritionists recommend at least 1500 a day. Plus, when you exercise you eat back the calories you burned. And every once in a while pizza doesn't matter...but everyday it does. Because along with calories you want to watch your protein and carbs and fat to make sure your hitting those targets too.

in regards to your "chicken or pizza " questions (not sure about your other one)
. No it doesn't technically matter for weight loss, however long term weight loss and maintenance is generally achieved by making healthy choices and eating metabolism boosting foods-which pizza isn't :P.
That being said, nothing wrong with eating the foods you like in moderation.

Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is an estimate of how many calories you'd burn if you were to do nothing but rest for 24 hours. It represents the minimum amount of energy needed to keep your body functioning, including breathing and keeping your heart beating.

Your BMR does not include the calories you burn from normal daily activities or exercise.
    This info is under TOOLS/BMR

MFP takes this number, considers your activity level, age, etc and then decides about how many calories you burn a day with basic activities. That number is found under MY HOME/GOALS.

MFP then takes your weight loss goal into consideration and determines your daily calorie goal. Look under the goals tab and it will show you the break down MFP has used.
  • It could definitely be right. Your body cant burn off the bad stuff if you aren't feeding it enough. If you don't eat enough your body is going to store the foods you do give it so if you are going to eat less calories then you should probably be sure they are 'good' calories.

Just as an example.... I average 1200 burned in a day. My calories are set at 1410 a day. So my net calories would be only 210 for the day if I stuck to eating just the calories given to me. So essentially I'd be giving myself 210 calories to survive on. How horrible is that! But I do the right thing! I eat back most of my exercise calories which puts my daily calorie intake between 1700-2100 a day and I still lose about 2 lbs a week. And my net calories at about 500-900 which is still a fairly large deficient but it's really hard to eat anything more than I already do without giving myself 'bad' calories which I don't do but it is nice knowing that I can actually eat instead of being uncomfortable hungry and crabby like most people I know that are not eating enough. LOL Not at all saying this is your case just thought I would give you an example of what my day looks like so you know that it is possible to eat eat eat and still lose weight. Good luck!

wait... what? Of course it matters! Whole food is so jam packed with nutrients compared to processed food that has been stripped of everything good! I'm not saying never have pizza again - but make the healthier choice 90%. It does matter - every unhealthy choice puts us a little bit further away from our goal.

Just for the record, I describe the "healthy choice" for me as things with one ingredient. Chicken, steak, eggs, spinach, w/e. If it comes out of a box - it's most likely not a great choice.

Also - sugar is the devil.

We have been conditioned to believe that less food=weight loss....your body needs food to keep you going and if you don't feed it, it will find a way to feed itself.
If you don't get at least 1200 calories a day, your body will think you are lost in the wilderness without food and begin converting everything to fat so you don't die.
this is why people wonder why the scale isn't moving and they are eating less than what MFP recommends.
another thing...make sure you eat back your exercise calories...meaning if MFP set a calorie goal of 1400 calories for you and you eat all that...but you work out and burn 400 calories...as far as your body is concerned you have only eaten 1000 calories and your back in the wilderness.

Friend me if you like and there are a lot of very helpful people around to motivate and keep ya going.

Oh and chicken and pizza are fine as long as you don't eat the whole thing :P

Yes. Morning and evening workouts. Plus breastfeeding. It's getting to be a challenge to hit those numbers which I am loving. It just means I'm closer to maintenance.

    Completely agree, Steve!
  • Mine is about the same...it says I should do 1400 calories a day to take off a pound a week. I am eating back most of my exercise calories, so I am very close to the 1400 every day. I only joined MyFitnessPal about 2 weeks ago, but I have lost 2 pounds following the 1400 calories per day...it seems to be working for me.

This site is for more than just motivation - it's for information, for tracking calories, for education, for opinion, for fun - there's all kinds of things this site is for... I didn't "call you out", just slightly disagreed.

I'm just stating my opinion here - please don't be offended or get hurt feelings. I disagree that a calorie is a calorie, or a gram is a gram. If that were the case - I would be more than happy to live on spoonfuls of sugar (not even kidding - I've binged on exactly that before) The first thing I do for all my clients is put them on a real-food diet. I love eating low carb - but I don't ever start a client there. I start them by having them eat only things with one ingredient. Of course there are healthy things that come in boxes - but it's so easy to have a rule to follow at first while we're getting used to healthy - whole food eating.

Sorry for hurting your feelings again - I didn't intend to take a shot at you.

OMG I just apologized. That's not mean! I won't give my opinion any more, I swear....

I am sorry that i'm arrogant and make everyone look stupid, I get on these boards to try to help. There are some people who cut their fat down so low that (in my opinion) it hurts their weight loss. Some people even base it on old or crappy science. I only intended to try to help, and quoting people just lets them know what I'm responding to. You seem like a really nice, helpful woman, and I'm sorry to have hurt you so deeply.

You've "disagreed" with 3 people on this post alone in such a rude way that it's pretty disgraceful. You need to learn to be more polite. I doubt that your even any sort of anything that would involve clients, and if you are you must have a high turn over because I certainly wouldn't pay money to have someone talk to me like that. Honestly, there's only one person attacking in this thread. I've apologized and gone to lengths to explain more clearly what I meant only to be attacked over and over. Again, sometimes in type - things might come off a different way than intended. I'll attach more smiley faces to my post to show that they are friendly.

    Would that be better?

I see you've lost 70 pounds and that is remarkable - really great job! If you have secrets to share, I'm sure people would be happy to hear it.

I don't think he is being mean. He is being bluntly honest, which is what we should all want to hear on this site. Not some sugar-coated BS making it seem it is ok to have the crappy food such as pizza and saying it is the same as having a piece of steak or a chicken breast just because it equals the same calories.

******News Flash****** A Calorie is NOT a Calorie. I highly suggest reading the book Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. He breaks it down where it proves scientifically that a calories isn't a calorie.

From reading the comments, it seems you are the only one getting your feelings hurt.

When people post topics on these boards, they should be expecting to hear the Good, the bad and the ugly. If a person can't handle any and all comments that are posted.

Ummm I can honestly say Steve is very into the healthy eating and working out. We go to a group workout together on Sundays . I know he spends alot of time researching different techniques for diets and workouts. He also has several clients who do pay him money, and guess what they listen to him too. You know why? Cause he sort of knows what he's talking about. Just because someone disagrees with you doesnt make them arrogant. He was very matter of fact in his thoughts. A pizza calorie is way different than a chicken calorie. If you can't see that then your not being honest with anyone. Miss Helen, if you were offended maybe you should RELAX! The person starting the thread wasn' t. She actually thanked everyone for their opinion.
