I ate dinner at 6 pm and didn't sleep until midnight. I was HUNGRY at midnight!!!!!!!!! So, before I passed out, I decided to eat half an apple. Wise thing to do or not? Not sure but I did it. And, why exactly was I hungry? My calories were at 1352. Could that be a reason or was it since I ate early (6pm) and slept so late?

Would love some input...

Well, if you were under for your calories for the day, it was an OK choice. If you were over, then you probably should have just gone to bed. Either way, you didn't go crazy on your food...half an apple was a good choice!

The eating late issue has been debated sooo many times...but I remember reading a study that said it didn't make that much of a difference....DEPENDING on what it was that you were eating. Basically from what I can remember the study showed that if you ate junk then yes it would cause you to gain weight but if you ate an apple for example  then it didn't.
BUT as I said....the issue has people on both sides that would swear they were right either way lol.

Half an apple is hardly a bad thing, even if it is in the middle of the night! 1352 could be low, it depends. Did you exercise more than usual? If so that could be why you were hungry.

Ok, to me a bad thing to do in the middle of the night is to eat, say, a carton of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Now THAT would be a problem at midnight!

Well, I am still trying to figure out the whole calorie thing. I am 5 feet 2 and 174lbs. Need to be around 134lbs. (my goal). I am not even sure if I have my whole calculator for the food calries done right. I just felt yesterday that 1352 was kind of on the low side but I am not really sure if thats where I need to be at. I burn about 200 calories daily in exercise (30 mins). So, still trying to figure it all out...

I have found that on the days where I exercise (cardio) for a minimum of 30 minutes, I can usually go about 200 calories OVER what the system says and I still lose weight. On days where I don't exercise, I find it best to stay within the calorie guidelines. Maybe try upping the calories a little or have a small snack before bed (like the 1/2 an apple) and just see.

You can play around with it....but MFP usually calculates how many calories you need a day to lose whatever amount per week that you have set for yourself. They'd like you to eat the calories that are set and then if you exercize...eat those as well. I'm not sure if that was what you were asking or not because I forgot to hit quote lol. Hope it helped some.

When we're tired our bodies tend to send out the following message: "I'm tired. Either put me to sleep or feed me more energy if you're NOT going to put me to sleep". It's a good thing to remember because frequently it's actually sleep that your body wants. However, in your case last night, when you're awake your body tends to want food every 2-4 hours so going 6 hours is a big stint. 1/2 an apple was a great choice

Unless your name is Eve an apple is never a bad thing. Even if it was midnight and even if you had exceeded your calories. If you were hungry almost anything would have been a poorer choice than an apple. If you had just gone to bed you might have layed there for half an hour obsessing about being hungry and gotten up and eaten something truly foolish (been there, done that).

Give yourself a break and credit for the choice.

    Great work.

an apple is probably one of the better snacks to have at night--I know that many diabetics swear by an apple at night because apples are low in Glycemic Index--meaning the body digests it slowly, so the sugar isn't released too fast to cause your blood sugar to spike. This means that your body doesn't go "haywire" from the natural sugar--which is a good thing, even for non-diabetics.

Personally, I have 1 sheet of graham crackers every night with 1/2 tablespoon of PB--great snack and keeps my levels fine through the night.
