Shopping List 101

I was wondering if we all could maybe give out ideas to each other of what is truly "healthy" out there in the stores. Some ideas...that way we can all reap the benefits of good food and health.

For example :-

I like to buy brown rice/brown pasta. Olive Oil. Organic Eggs.
Pita Bites (Costco)
Blue Agave Sweetner (Trader Joes) - keeps sugar from spiking!
I prefer sun chips instead of regular greasy chips.
Tried Pomergrante Green Ice Tea (35 calories) - loved it!
Chicken - Organic is better - (I have visited a regular chicken farm and they are not that great in terms of living space for chikies!)

I would love to hear what you all buy and is considered "good" food. Low calories etc.

This way we can all help each other..

    Good idea!

    Here are my must-haves:

    - organic red / orange / yellow bell peppers
    - organic extra lean ground turkey
    - organic instant oatmeal (a little bit of cane sugar and low sodium)
    - organic bananas
    - ingredients for hummus (chickpeas, tahini, garlic, lemon, olive oil)
    - organic frozen berries (for oatmeal, smoothies, desserts, in salads........)
    - organic brown rice pasta
    - organic tomatoes of any kind

    My husband and I love to buy these (and get them on regular basis):

    broccoli rabe (there are some great very low cal recipes out there)
    organic brown rice
    Ak-Mak crackers (these are good - if I am really in the mood for something bad, I have 5 of these (they are very big each and only 115 cal. for all 5) with some Laughing cow cheese piece - mmmm...)
    red beans
    those long cucumbers that are individually wrapped in plastic (these do not have the wax film on them that all or most fruits and veggies are covered in)
    organic bell peppers
    tomatoes
    organic bananas
    bean sprouts (great in salads or stir fries)
    snow peas
    organic chicken

    I guess I can keep going.... but I don't want to make myself hungry because I start thinking of all the great recipes I can use these ingredients in :laugh:

    a lot of what has been said is on my list so to be different, here are things i can't leave the store without!

    vitatops - chocolate... heat in the microwave for a few seconds and yum!!
    morningstar farms veggie cakes - i LOVE the southwest ones, just bought the ginger teriyaki to try
    kashi frozen meals - i work two jobs, so i am sometimes short on time to cook, these are healthy and yummy!!
    organic baby carrots
    hummus!
    yoplait light french vanilla and lowfat granola = great breakfast!
    egg beaters
    sargento lowfat mozzarella
    sunflower seeds to eat on their own or on salads
    fatfree, sugarfree instant pudding
    reduced fat nilla wafers (to crumble 1 or 2 into the pudding)
    multigrain cheerios
    whole wheat tortillas
    progresso soups
    kashi tlc crackers
    kashi tlc granola bars - dark chocolate cherry (they are the lowest fat/cal of the ones they make)
    frozen stir fry veggies (when i don't have time to cut up a bunch of veggies)

    well that is good for now. it's making me hungry thinking about all the good stuff!

    Great idea! I have already added to my weekly grocery list with your suggestions. Here are some of mine (in addition to those already mentioned):

    ~ salsa
    ~ Wasa rye crispbread
    ~ Weight Watchers cream cheese in individual serving cups (60 cal each)
    ~ Nutella (for a special treat but can't have it around at all around once a month! LOL!)
    ~ mangos
    ~ Light and Fit Vanilla low-fat yogurt
    ~ hummus!!!
    ~ tilapia for quick, easy fish to grill or broil with just a splash of lemon on it
    ~ crimini mushrooms
    ~ Newman's Own balsalmic vinaigrette (a tablespoon on endamame or garbanzo beans or cucumber wedges is great!)
    ~ nuts nuts nuts of all types
    ~ fruits and vegetables of all types
    ~ Amy's Organic frozen entrees (for emergencies like when the kids are having mac & cheese or pizza and I need my own "treat")
    ~ Kashi frozen entrees (same as the reason for Amy's above)

    So many others but basically, I try to shop the perimeter of the grocery store. I do get packages and boxes so that I have quick and easy snacks that are better than the usual trans-fat, sodium-hefty stuff out there.

    Thanks again for starting this thread. I am always looking to expand how I look at food.

    can someone give me a good brand of brown rice... i just dont seem to like it.. what am i choosing wrong... am i suppose to look for long grain???:ohwell:

    i don't usually have a lot of time, so i buy the boil in the bag brown success rice. i usually stir fry some veggies and put on a splash of low sodium soy and i hardly notice a difference!

    try a brown basmati rice. Nice flavour!

    another thing I want to add is Nature's Path Smart Bran w/ Psyllium cereal. Really tasty and healthy and packed with fibre. My favourite treat is healthy chocolate pudding with 1/2 a banana sliced up and 1/2 serving of that cereal. Pretty healthy dessert!

    I do brown basmati and its pretty good. I add mushrooms and spinach to it sometimes and it comes out flavorful.

    You can also use low sodium beef, chicken or veggie broth instead of water.

    Here's a winner for you... (again a recommendation from Clean Eating Magazine!)

    Add chopped up fresh cherries and sliced almonds to brown rice for a delicious protein-rich side dish! How good does THAT sound?!

    Fiber One cereal! I LOVE LVOE LOVE it! You can have it on its own or add it to a ton of things..just look on Hungry Girl!:happy:

    LOL! I don't buy all of it all the time...these are just some of the things I buy when I shop! :laugh: :laugh: I vary it each week and get other things of course!!

    My favorite right now is Trader Joe's Thai Joe's - Prig Khing Green Beans. Stir fry with some shrimp.

    So easy, so good and so light!
