So I started 2 weeks ago and have lost 20lbs. I starting working out 1 week ago and saw that I got more calories. I know people have asked this question over and over.. but when I workout I burn alot of calories because I am so overweight. I have not been eating my exercise calories and have still lost 9lbs this week. One day it told me I needed to eat at least 1200 calories or my body would go into starvation mode. My current calorie goal is 1870 and I haven't even been reaching anywhere near that.. So should I be eating those calories or sticking to above 1200 like I have been since I am losing?? Would I lose more if I ate more?

since u have more weight to lose, i dont think it would hurt u much as of right now if u dont eat back ur workout calories. people who dont have all that much weight to lose i think should be more concered w the starvation mode idea and trying to eat back their calories from excercise cause its easier for somebody w less weight to loss for their body to go into starvation mode. i think if you keep doing what you are doing, itd b fine but the closer you get to your goal weight, you could damage urself i the long run and may run across a stand still much faster if your not eating enough now.. thats what people say anyways. may not hurt u now, but in the future it may possibly..

What is considered "starvation mode" doesn't happen instantaneously. The best advice I can give you is eat until you are full and then no more.

Everybody's body is different. I am overweight and my dietician told me since I am trying to lose weight and not just maintain it, not to eat them. She told me if you eat them back, it's like not exercising at all. I'm losing by not eating my exercise calories. But I am also confined to a wheelchair, so I can't do as much. But she said for anyone who is trying to lose, should not eat their exercise calories. Hope this helps!

thanks! That did help. Think I will stick to what I am doing for now.
  • Do what works for your body, I always eat mine and am right on track. Starvation mode is not going to kick in on day one or week one, more like a month in or more. Just keep it balanced and also watch more than your calories, your calcium and sodium is just as important!

    Good Luck on your journey.

If MFP set you a goal of 1800 why are you eating 1200. You should be getting as close as you can to 1800 for now. The problem is you have nowhere else to go, you can't go ny lower than 1200 and I gather you have a lot of weight to lose so in a few months when you are stuck at the same weight then what happens?

I always eat my exercise calories back. I am about 180-190 pounds, 5'6. I have been doing this a couple weeks and just bought a new pant size. I couldn't live on 1200 calories. I get headaches if I don't eat enough. I chose 1 pound a week weight loss, and I can eat 1470 before execising.
