The elliptical can track heart rate as Well as calculate calories burned using weight, age, and intensity. If my hrm and elliptical are showing different numbers which one to believe?

How different are the numbers? I found on my elliptical that the numbers were pretty similar to the HRM, but I always take the lesser amount to make sure I am not overestimating calories burned. It's all an approximation anyway.

either your HRM or what ever is lower. If the machine is higher it could be that it is set up that way to make users feel good about burning more than they actually are, and therefore keep using the machine as they think they are burning a lot of calories (which may not be true)
  • Read the owner's manual. Calories burned depends on a lot of factors, especially weight of the person doing the exercise. My elliptical reports calories burned assuming a 150 lb person. The exercise database on myfitnesspal seems to track with moderate resistance on my elliptical, so what I do is just recalculate the calories the elliptical reports factoring for weight.

I would vote for the HRM as this is more calibrated to your age, gender, weight, body type, and activity level rather than on "averages" used by the machines.

The machine is much higher than the hrm
