So I need some advice for my future mother-in-law. She's been overweight for about 16 years, since the premature birth of her youngest when she had to spend about a month in the hospital with them (twins). She has been actively trying for about 2 years to lose weight, lost about 10 pounds, then this past fall she had a knee injury/surgery which set her back. She's going to physical therapy now and is hoping it will be a spring board back into losing weight. One problem that she's shared with me is that she doesn't have a good appetite. Her issues with not being able to lose weight now are from, besides not being active enough, and not eating enough. She's knows her body's probably in starvation mode but she doesn't get hungry and doesn't want to force herself to eat. I've talked to her about protein powders or even Carnation Instant Breakfast (I know it has a good amount of sugar, but it's a good source of protein, especially with milk), but I didn't get a good sense of how she felt about it. I'm also going to offer to go on walks with her when I'm around (Her PT has okay'ed walks). What else can I suggest to her?

Has she checked with her doctor? Her doc might be able to make recommendations... maybe even an appetite stimulant.
  • Have her start eating small meals every 2-3 hours. I do whey protein shakes with fruit and milk, they are about 350 calories after I enter everything in. But if she does not eat enough she can't lose weight, I know from experience. Have her get 3 lb weights and do some curls and other weight exercises to build muscle. Good luck!!
