this is for all of you that weigh yourself daily and freak out! (not trying to offend or call anyone out, because i have been guilty of it as well)!

yesterday was my weekly weigh in day. i weigh in every wednesday morning before i shower and get ready for work. i stepped on the scale and had gained 2 lbs from last wednesday. i didnt freak out too much because i know i ate crap last week and didnt drink as much water as i usually do. i was a little dissapointed in myself but let it go. i did an awesome workout yesterday and ate really well also so just out of curiosity...i weighed myself again this morning before my shower. and guess what!!!! i was 3.1 pounds lighter than yesterday!! (1.1 less than last wednesday) lol now, i didnt record this as a loss on here because i know its just flucuation, but this is a great example of what happens when you weigh daily. i will stick to whatever number shows next wednesday but im not gonna lie...i was REALLY excited to see that number! lol

just thought i'd share! hope everyone has a great day!

  • I fixed it by having my husband hide my scale , If I can't see it , I can't freak out about it! I only weigh myself on the 1st of each month! Works like a charm...

I know what you mean - and it would have been easy to go back on and log the lower weight. But as you say sticking to a weekly weigh is best. I am sure you will drop those few pounds next week. BTW I also weigh in on a Weds but in the evening usually.

its a personal thing......if your the type to weigh yourself obsessively and you don't understand the normal body fluctuations, daily weigh ins could cause a great deal of emotional distress even depression.

the idea that a daily weigh in could help, is based on the fact that it acts as a reminder or a motivator every morning to stay on track.

there are other ways of getting that benifit. You really have to weigh out the pros and cons, if its gonna motivate you great but if it is gonna cause depressive states then not worth it.

personally, and talking to many many obesity specialists at conferences, the consensus is that once a week at the most is sufficient, and even going 2 weeks of more could be benificial if you can be motivated elsewhere.

think about it, if you are on the scale once a week and you see a 1-2 lb difference its great but if you weigh in once a month and see a 10 lb difference, it is a whole new level of accomplishment and looks so much better in your head.

bottom line don't obsess over weigh ins.......

    great topic!

lol i tried that and i used to be soo adicited to weighin my self everyday that i would rip the house apart to find it. not no more tho. only on monday and friday
  • I weigh in every 2 weeks but I do step on the scale in between to keep myself in check. During my entire journey, I've never relied on the number on the scale. I've lost more inches than I have in lbs and that for me is bigger motivation. Being able to lose clothing sizes is so much more fun than obsessing over lbs.
  • It's actually precisely because of the fluctuations that I _do_ weigh daily - If I see 2,3,4,5,7 or 10 Lb change from the previous day (all of which I have seen) I don't freak out because I know it's just fluctuations, scale inaccuracies, or perhaps cosmic rays - that's why I do it daily. if I did it weekly and gained I wouldn't know if it was a high fluctuation or if I actually had gained.

Reading all the posts about this I think it's a very personal thing - I prefer to watch the trend (drawing the perceived delta over time in my head) and not look at any single number - but I'm sure this is going to be different for everyone. For me routine works - so every morning, first thing I do is weigh and record - then I can get a really good handle on the trend over time. If I tried to do weekly I'm quite sure I would forget and probably be disappointed with a number stemming from a high fluctuation.
