Gentle exercise for toning stomach ?

Hello,
I am starting to notice my weight coming off in clothes etc. Also since swimming my legs and back are becoming more toned.
However I have a really jelly belly ! I've never had a flat stomach nor do I really want one but I would like it a little more toned.
I am looking for ideas for some gentle exercises that would target this area in particular. Having had abdominal surgery a year ago and subsequent back problems I am scared to do sit ups and not sure I could even manage them !
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks Rach

I don't know of any "gentle" ab exercises- if they were easier, more people would be doing them. Since you had surgery, check with your doctor to determine what level of exertion you're capable of handling.
More importantly, you cannot spot-reduce fat in a specific area of the body.0 -
join a pilates class - great if you have a bad back and the best thing for toning up your core muscles0

Something that I did to START strengthing up my stomach muscles (I too had surgery that left a scar running from my breast bone all the way down to pelvic bone) is just start flexing your stomach...like tightening it up and then relaxing it. Working your muscles that way. Just do stuff slowly and you'll be able to start doing crunches and sit ups again. It took me a while to be able to do stuff, w/having my stomach muscles cut open. Just start out slow and you'll be surprised how quickly you can gain your muscles back..also something else that takes stomach muscles..sit indian style on the floor sitting straight up...takes more stomach muscles than you think!!0
