I was talking to my Mum about my periods being sooooo heavy. and they have never been like this before. Mum said: O' you might be going threw an early menopause. Mum says this mid-age crisis usually strikes around the ages of 45yrs--48yrs & 50yrs.

What is this condition excatly? I thought the only thing you suffered was mood swings and hot flushes. I've not experienced this yet.

But are heavy periods one of the signs of Menopause?

I have been in menopause since I was 46 years old - no periods at all for the last 2 years. One of my friends (age 48) is going through what you are & has been for several years. Yes, this is part of our "growing up"!

I am 45 and have been having the same thing since I turned 40. It's miserable and I just dread that time of the month. I have heard that it is the beginning of menopause. It's nice to know there are others in the same boat!

I don't know if it's part of menopause, but I do know it's a typical part of the process we women go through. Mine started getting heavier and heavier throughout my 30s. I eventually had an ablation, which was a godsend. My periods were extremely light after that. I'm in what I suppose is perimenopause. I go a few months sometimes without a period, but then I'll have a few in a row. I go through phases of insane hot flashes, and I go through phases where they're nonexistent. Ahh, the joys of being a woman...

I had very heavy periods and turns out I had many polyps inside my uterus. I had a DnC and now my periods are normal again.

    But I am only 34.

 thanks guys for responding! I do feel better!!!

Soooo I'm becoming a non-sexual bean...:grumble: we'll soon see about that! bring on the diet and exercise routine. I understand that Japanese women sail threw menopause with no problems at all thanks to their diets of raw fish and soya. green tea.

    Love'n'kiss's!

I started peri-menopause at 45, three years ago. Prior to that time, my periods were always mild, however once the hot flashes started, I had many cycles were things were so heavy that I had to call in to work !! There are a whole host of 'wonderful' (say that as sarcastically as possible) surprises including hot flashes, night sweats which results in lost sleep, irregular cycles, heavy flow, anxiety attacks for some, moods swings, days when you feel like you'll burst into tears if some just looks at you funny - oh, yes, just a host of wonderful possibilities!!

There is a forum of women supporting one another through menopause here on MFP - you might look it up - search for FLAME DOLLS and you'll find us!

My SIL was going through that and had an ablation and now has no issues whatsoever.

Mine started getting very heavy and painful but I started taking cod liver oil and vitamin D after reading that it was helpful and they have gotten lighter than they were before they got really heavy and painful. I'm pretty happy they've gotten better because they used to put me in bed for a couple of days!
