I am looking into buying a kitchen scale to better know what I am eating and just wanted to check if there is anything in particular I should look for in a little scale. I am finding ebay to be the cheapest place, but of course I can't see them and I have never had a kitchen scale before.
Thanks

we got ours from sur la table..

ours is red, but it looks like the only color they have in stock right now is pink. it's a very good scale though.. i haven't had a digital scale.. i like the old fashioned one because i can physically "see" that it's resting accurately on the zero before i put the food on it.

ditto - mine is a small plastic WW scale that got at WalMart years ago...less then $10.

I've been getting along well with a My Weigh scale, though I think I'd get a different model now that I"ve been working with this one for a while. I think I'd get the i5000, which comes with a nice big bowl. I have the 7001DX, which has a nice bowl, but given all the baking I do, I think I'd go with the bigger one.

(Got mine from Old Will Knott Scales. Web site's kinda corny, but service was great.)

I bought a cheap non-digital scale at Wal-Mart (about $8) when I first started. I only lasted about a week with it because no matter how many times I weighed the same item, it would weigh differently. Also, because I was worried about small portions of things like cheese and it was difficult to tell the difference between 15 and 30 grams there was a big difference in calories. I also had trouble getting it to stay on 0. I then opted for a digital scale ($30) and love it!! Both my digital scale and my indoor grill have been the most important kitchen tools on my journey.

I am using a postage scale that I got at Wal-Mart. I bought it to calculate postage for mail, and now I use it to measure my food. It has a tare button so I can subtract the weight of my plate or bowl, and the maximum weight probably isn't as much as an actual food scale would be, but that kind of helps because if my scale won't weigh that piece of steak I wanted to have, then it's more than I need to be eating anyway! It's also really accurate because it is designed to weigh mail, where a tenth of an ounce can be significant in the postage price.

Just wanted to throw that out there...check for "postage scales" and you may be able to find more options that may work for you (it will also open up possibilities for where you can look...you can check Wal-Mart and K-Mart, but you can also check out office supply stores).
  • Thank you so much for all of your imputs. It was actually very helpful, I think I will go with a pretty one. Ha ha ha.
Actually you all made good points. I kind of like the idea of the ones with a bowl, but we will see what we can afford.
    Thanks again!
  • Ha ha, I did the best thing for starting out. I knew my husband was in Kmart, so I called him and asked him to pick me one up. I told him I didn't care as long as I had one and so he got me a little 6 or 8 dollar one and I use it all the time now. I still want a pretty and fancy one with a glass bowl, but for now this works just fine. I was testing stuff out to see how many servings were really in a box to see if they were telling the truth.
