I've been running for around a year. I've done two half marathons and a couple 5k's. I really enjoy it but my knees most unbearably by mile 5. Someone suggest glucosomine. So I'm gonna try that.
But my feet as well. Any tips on buying shoes. I heard to buy them a half size bigger.
Or maybe I have bad form or something.
Any suggestions would be great. : )

Go to a running specialty store. They'll judge your gait and be able to find shoes that work best for you.0

I buy my shoes a whole size bigger.
What stretches do you do? My knees hurt when my ITB is tight.
This week I think I have stretched longer than I have run!0 -
I have just taken up running too!
The main thing that everyone is telling me is to have the correct trainers for running. I have heard of shops that you can go to where they video you (when i say you i mean just your feet!) running on a treadmill and then advise you which trainer is best for how your foot falls i.e. on the inside or neurtal etc.
i know someone who done this and they saved money as the trainers they advised where cheaper than the ones they had in mind.
Good luck!0 -
Go to a running store and let them test your gait on a treadmill. Also, make sure you warm up and stretch well after that before you start running. Also, maybe try an ace bandage on your knees for added support. Good luck....and you are NOT a bigginer running all those marathons....0

I've been a runner for about 5 years now, with 7 half marathons and too many other smaller races to count, under my belt. I buy my running shoes one whole size bigger. Like the replies above, I would suggest going to a running specialty store to have your gait checked. They will have you run on a treadmill while they video tape your feet. They will then let you know whether or not you supinate or pronate your feet, or if your gait is neutral. You will buy shoes according to your gait. I would also suggest stretching, stretching and more stretching. It's very important, and should help with the knee pain. Hope this helps.0

Thanks for all the advice. I know I need to do better on my stretching. That is one thing I slack on. Am actually on my way now to go running. When I get back I'm going to look into a place that will tape my run
Thanks again!0 -
I definitely helps to make sure your quads are stretched very well. My knees used to hurt quite a bit but after stretching my quads well most of the pain went away.
As far as going to a speciality store that is great but you have to remember while the people that work in these stores are usually runners that doesn't make them experts on running form. They may tell you that you over/under pronate but that isn't always necessarily the case.
I have have always been told that I over-pronate. And I might, I have never watched a video of myself. But about 12 months ago I bought a pair of Saucony Kinvaras (minimalist shoes) and I loved them. I am now wearing Nike Free's which are also minimalist shoes and like them even more than the Kinvaras. The have little cushioning but I have had no leg pain at all.0
