So, I guess I hate weight lifting dvds

I have tried 30 Day Shred and Chalean Extreme and I just cannot get into them. I love cardio dvds - Turbofire is amazing and does amazing things to me. But, these weight DVDs I just cannot cannot get into. I was thinking of picking off a few P90X... I know I need to add some weights to my cardio but I just can't find the right thing. Does anyone have good luck with just dumbell routines that you've designed yourself?

Try going to self.com or any other fitness based websites. They have all sorts of ideas for weight lifing work outs no video's required. I tend to just do routines on my own, but I used to be a competitive swimmer & spent a lot of time around the weight room so I use a lot of those old moves. But I love trying the new workouts that I read in my Self magazine.

Do some combo moves using light weights. Try doing "squat to over head presses" using light dumb bells, it will really get your heart rate up fast. Start with the dumb bells at your sides or curled by your chest, your choice. Then go into a squat position, then when you stand up, extend the dumb bells over your head. any exercise, stretch first, especially the legs since you will be doing squats. Try 4-5 sets of 10-12 reps and I think you will see a pretty good burn.

Cwdanley - are you saying, just do that one squat/press combo, maybe 3 times per week, for example? Would that be enough resistance training?

Then maybe I could add some more exercises later? I have learned a few exercises I like from the DVDs - but they just move toooo slowly, the music stinks, some of the exercises I do not like, etc. I need something simple, measureable, and not too time consuming. My cardio is already time consuming.

The current issue of Oxygen magazine has a whole combo-move routine in it. Oxygen has new routines every month, so you might find something there.

What is about the weight lifting that you don't like? The moves? Is it boring? What are you looking for?

Editing - I just read your last post. You can always turn down the volume and put on your own music to lift by - that's what I do sometimes. I've done ChaLEAN Extreme three times and since I know all of the moves I just put on my own music. I also tend to finish an exercise before the video because I already know the moves, so I can just start them while she is still explaining them on the video - so when I finish, I just push >>| to advance to the next move. Instead of forwarding, you could also just add in a few cardio moves while you are waiting for the video to advance - some burpees, jumping jacks, jump squats, etc. That would liven it up and add a cardio element.

    Mmtiernan:

As far as what I am looking for, I am looking for a resistance training routine I can do weekly to supplement my Turbofire cardio sessions. I want something for my back, arms, chest, upper legs, core. I would like to do it Mon-Wed-Fri, and I only have access to dumbells. I want it to be under 30 minutes. Does that help? I'll check out the oxygen workout if I can find it.

You might try looking at Gabby Reece's 'circuits.' They're free at this site:

    http://www.gabbyreece360.com/category/fitness-360/workouts-fitness-360/

She lists the exercises, tells you what equipment you need and then demonstrates each of the moves. You then simply follow the circuit at your own pace and with your own music, if desired.

The combo workouts in Oxygen are much like the combo moves in the Lean Phase of ChaLEAN Extreme.

There is also a good workout on menshealth.com called the "Tar Heels" workout. It uses a medicine ball, but you can also use it holding a dumbell instead. I had my daughter do this workout three times per week when she was recovering from mono last year to help rebuild her strength.

I actually chose ChaLEAN because the workouts were shorter than P90X (single mom - no time!) and I easily finish the ChaLEAN weight lifting workouts in about 30 minutes, when forwarding past the instructions. I know that lifting slow is boring, but it really does make a huge, huge difference. Just put on your own music to get yourself fired up!

I'm currently doing the ChaLEAN weight lifting workouts, which are three times per week and then subbing in Insanity for my cardio. I've got the TurboFire Greatest HIITs DVD and use that sometimes as well.

    Hope this helps!

Mmtiernan - I don't mind lifting slow, its all the talking in between that gets to me. Maybe its a little too easy for me? Maybe I should move to the middle phase and see if I like it better? Maybe I'll give it another try today (chalean extreme). I am a busy mom of 3 and every minute counts in my day.
