this is to those who KNOW, not who are just guessing or have an opinion or who want to tell me just to cut back on my sodium....
can you balance out "extra" sodium with extra water????
i have a very hard time keeping my sodium in check (my diary is open and the last few days i had binges so please do go off those days).....i consistently drink 800-100 oz of water a day in addition to my coffee in the am and a diet soda here or there....
so my question is, how much water do you need to drink to continually flush out your system so you dont retain from the sodium you eat????

There isn't a formula for this. If you take in 50 mg of extra sodium, drinking an 8 oz glass of water isn't going to flush it out. There are so many variables in this, it would be impossible. What I would recommend is sitting down and figuring out why you're consistently going over on sodium and work toward finding a solution. If you're binging, then figure out what caused those binges, what foods did you have available that were so high in sodium to binge on and how do you make them less available. Work on the behavioral change, not the food change.0

From this article, I found:

*It is very important you balance your sodium intake with your water consumption. Take 1/4 teaspoon of salt per quart of water - every 4-5 glasses of water. Be sure to get sea salt. The best is Celtic sea salt or Himalayan sea salt, both of which are readily available at any health food store.
From the American Heart Association, I found this:
1/4 teaspoon salt
= 575 mg sodium0 -
Blood test will show if your sodium is over. Bloating though is washed away by water. I agree that there are many factors with sodium. Eating high sodium foods can lead to other internal problems. Drink as much water as you can. Every doctor that I worked for and several were kidney specialist promoted water as a preventative factor to block kidney failure. So GET YOUR WATER ON. Water has never been bad for the body until organs stop working properly. If your drank water before hand those organs would not fail...lol catch 22. Also not your problem.
And since I have read your diets several times and know a bit about you. A binge like you had will not impact you as much as you think. You have been eating and exercising consistently. Shake off the weekend and hydrate yourself. You got this!!!:drinker:0 -

Good information to have on hand. Fortunately, I am drinking enough water (20 cups/day) based on 1500 mg of sodium/day.0 -
I make sure to keep my potassium intake high. Along with consuming a lot of water throughout the day. And my sodium intake is ridiculous.0

You should actually try to balance potassium with sodium in your diet. I think the preferred ratio is twice as much potassium as sodium. If you just want to counteract a high sodium day or meal you should drink plenty of water, but I'm not sure what quantity "plenty" is.0
