beans (dried that you can soak): black, garbanzo, kidney, white etc. (you can toast these, add them on top of salads, mix into rice, etc)
all, berries, fruits and veggies...the brighter the colors the better!
nuts, seeds, some dehydrated fruit (watch the sugar)
almond milk has the lowest calories (40 in vanilla unsweetened) and it tasted delicious!
frozen berries to add to your oatmeal and cream of wheat
    natural, no salt peanut butter
    veggie burgers
    hummus for dips and spreads
salsa instead of salad dressing and as a dip or to bake chicken with

hope this gives you some ideas.

I try to eat as much "whole foods" as possible. I credit knocking out the processed stuff to my weight loss. Read labels! If ingredients are things that I don't know what they are (or I do and I know they're bad) or I can't pronounce them, I try not to eat them. Some people (my mother) goes as far as "if it HAS a label- don't eat it". Fruits, vegetables, lean meats, eggs, and nuts are what I try to stick with. Good luck on your journey!

forgot - greek yogurt!!! plain can be used instead of sour cream for example or eaten on its own...its yummers!
  • My eating focuses on fresh vegetables (ones I like raw or steamed), protein (I eat lots of tuna and chicken), and fruits - in that order. I love Cherrios so I use them as breakfast with milk, or just eat them plain for a snack. When you get the hungaries for sweets - try the Kelloggs Fiber Plus bars...they are good and reasonable in calories. The standard "shop the store perimeter" is something I really try to do - avoiding the bakery and deli of course!

Good luck! You can do this! You are worth it!

Tuna is good... meat wise try to stick to white lean meat like Turkey and Chicken. If you can't give up the stodge switch to wholemeal - pasta, rice, bread.. is always a good way to start cutting out processed foods. Salads and fruits are always good. I personally buy lots of veg for my evening meal and then any I have left over I throw into a chunky vegetable soup.

Fave snacks are crackerbread/ryvita with low fat cottage cheese (it still feels like a bit of a treat and helps my cheese cravings!), nuts, raw veg - cherry tomatoes, carrots with humous etc. Pitta breads and wholemeal wraps are a winner..... a spoonful of low fat yoghurt as my replacement for ice cream.

There are loads of things... which I've probably not thought of. I find the best way is to ease myself in to it (which I'm in the process of doing again). If I try to cut everything out all at once, you've more change of falling off the wagon (hence my cottage cheese and low fat yoghurt!).

Rule of thumb Stick to the outside of the grocery store and try to use whole grain whenever you can. Lots of water (anything in it and it's not water anymore!) Also i have found many many flavored teas that help (0 calroies) try Chai or Ginger or if you like sweeter try teas with hibiscus and rose hips in them.

oh Hummus is fantastic by the way and so is Tzatziki but only a couple tbl spoons...i tend to want to eat the whole container. I also find a half a box of Gardennay soup (harvest mushroom or asparagus and basil are about 90 calories and are thick and rich) with my salad or veggie sushi or just as a snack can make me feel more satified.

    Fruit
Blackberries, Strawberries, Blueberries (berries contain the lowest amount of sugar and are full of antioxidants)
    Bananas
Melons (i just bought some cantaloupe at the store on sale, 2 for 1 and it was so super juicy!)

    Vegetables
    Baby Spinach
    Mushrooms
    Tomatoes
    Potatoes
    Zucchini
    Butternut Squash

    Canned
    Low Sodium Kidney Beans
    Low Sodium Chick Peas
(AVOID CANNED VEGGIES! Go for Frozen, The canning process sucks out most of the nutrients in the veg, and adds an obnoxious amount of sodium)

    Frozen
    Peas
    Corn
    Brussle Sprouts
    ect.

    Snacks
    Vitatop Muffins
    Hummus
  • Thanks for the ideas :)
