Antibiotic warning...

I've been off for a while.. thought I'd drop a note about my issues the last couple months & warn people of the potential side effect of antibiotics...
1st I had an abcessed tooth... the dentist prescribed a 10 day prescription of clindamycin... (normal enough) about 5 days into it I started getting pretty bad indigestion (I just brushed it off thinking it was the combination prescription ibuprofen & antibiotics I was taking).
About 5 days after I stopped taking my medications, I got severe stomach cramping & diarrhea (sorry gross  ) Anyhow, after a couple days of taking Imodium & Tums, I had to go to urgent care at the hospital. After 3 weeks of labs & other embarassing tests, they finally found I had C Difficile (the first 2 tests came back negative).
My illnes was caused by my prescription antibiotics. It killed too many good bacteria in my intestines allowing all the bad ones to grow out of control. My doctor said clindamycin is one of the most common antibiotics that causes C-Diff.
An easy way to help stop this from happening to you...eat yogurt while you are on antibiotics, it replenishes the good bacteria - I wish my dentist would have told me that.

My dad had this happen when I was a child. He was on Keflex and has colitis to begin with. The doctors couldn't figure out why he was so sick. He was in the hospital for 6 weeks, and they thought he might die until a friend, who happens to be a doctor, stopped by and looked at his chart, and said to get the hell off of the Keflex and take some acidopholus and eat yogurt!!!
Thanks for this reminder!0 -
Done that, been there, got the t-shirt.
I ended up being told I had a major internal yeast infection and the only time adults have yeast infections is when they have HIV. Talk about freaked out. The HIV test of course was negative, and I changed doctors to someone who knew what they were talking about.
I was finally diagnosed with Candida..basically an over growth of yeast. I now take a PROBOTIC every day to make sure the good bacteria are in my system. When I have to take an antibiotic, I double up on my probotics.
It is amazing what some doctors don't know about the body. They are trained to treat symptoms, not the true problem.0 -
:flowerforyou: Am very glad to hear that you are okay. Thank you for the warning . I have never had any problems with antibiotics myself. But will be more aware from now on.0

Another antibiotic with bad side effects is Doxycycline Hyclate. It can cause increased heart rate and chest pain, among other things. My ex was prescribed this drug, and we were in the emergency room twice for before we realized that it was the side effects. It was several weeks before the side effects abated.
