When is it better to add a protein shake, pre or post workout? Or does it matter?

I've heard both really. Especially after a workout because that's when your muscles are trying repair themselves.

Some fitness articles that I've read say before and some say after. I always have my protein shake within 30 minutes after my workouts. You mostly wanna get carbs before your workout that the biggest concern so that you don't burnout.
  • it is better after for the muscles to recover.

for muscle repair, within 2 hrs POST exercise. for satiety, PRE exercise. you will reap no other benefit from protein pre-workout other than satiety... :)
  • You should have a good combo of protein and Carbs about an hour and a half before and Immediately after a Strength Training workout.. within 15 minutes is Ideal..wait no longer than 45 minutes.. With cardio , it does not really matter :-)

    After.

If for no other reason you don't want stuff sloshing around in your stomach during your workout.

If you're using whey, it's a fast-acting protein and quickly repairs/build muscle after a workout.

Popular belief is post-workout within 30-60mins of workout.

Real truth may be that it doesn't really matter, even for serious weight lifting:

As I strive for optimal results, I've gone so far as to have a pre-workout protein shake 1 hr before workout, then a post-workout whey hydrosolate (quick absorption) shake generally an hour after, and lastly a casein (slow absorption) shake at night before bed. Have I noticed much difference when I just ate regular, whole proteins and other foods? Not much. But your results may vary.
