Why I would weigh in every day...

I am of the opinion that weighing your self is useless and pointless... I am also someone who becomes addicted to making that number smaller, so I don't own a scale, and I stay away from them. Instead I measure myself and do body fat percentage tests. Although I like this method because weight is so irregular, this shows the progression, which is what we all are aiming for....

This is why I weigh every day too! Glad I'm not the only one!

I'm with all of you, the more data the better. I've always weighed in daily...it's easier to get a feel for what's going on in your body that way. Weighing infrequently can delay seeing both a gain or a loss. Seeing a loss more quickly is motivating, and not seeing a gain quickly enough means you'll have more work to do when you finally do catch it (that's my main concern since I'm in maintenance). However, as you've mentioned, accepting that daily fluctuations are going to happen is really key.

Hacker's Diet Online. Plug in your numbers, watch the trend. Good stuff.

Or, if you have an Android-powered device, try the Libra app. Same charting (actually slightly better).

Hugely helpful stuff if you are inclined toward analysis.

Thanks! Just downloaded the Libra app!

I'm definitely going to try this. I weigh myself frequently but don't write it down, just get frustrated when it's up. This will help me loads!

I've been on this journey for almost five years now, and daily weighing is what keeps me accountable. I initially lost 72 pounds, regained 22, have lost 8-10 since then, and would like to lose and maintain after I lose about 5 more. I was probably too light at my lowest (125), and would love to be between 130-135. Right now, I'm bouncing between 137-140 and have been for several weeks. But, I am also not as strict about my diet as I was when I started at 197 in August 2006.

An example of why weighing once a week wouldn't work for me happened just last weekend. I had just broken 137 (on Friday)......and that had been a major accomplishment for me as I have been going up and down between 137 and 140 for going on four-five weeks. Anyhow, it was my birthday, there was a baby shower for one niece, a couples shower for a nephew all on Saturday, and then on Sunday we made over 400 cake balls for another niece's upcoming graduation. Needless to say, I didn't get any walking (my main form of exercise) in this weekend, ate more than I usually do, drank some beer, etc.....you get the idea. On Monday, the scale was saying 141.4 -- UGH!!!! Had I only weighed on Monday this week, I'd have been upset at myself. However, since Monday, my weight has steadily come down, and today it was at 138.2. Small losses, and not a huge gain, but had I not weighed daily, I wouldn't have known this.

Every morning, just before my shower

Good luck to all of you as you undertake your weight loss journey.

I am glad your way is working for you and others as well.
    Keep up the good attitude.
I am a hangup person - so another on MFP recommended that I go on this 30 day no-scale/ no-weigh-in challenge.
I only take measurements when I want to see how I am doing (which is once a week).
Happy to report that I am losing inches!! YAY!
I knew that already b/c my clothes were fitting differently but it is nice to be able to log some numbers and they are smaller than before.
I find that NOT weighing but just once a month is very freeing and has taken a load off my shoulders and decreased my stress about it. Stress is not good when trying to lose weight.
It doesn't consume me now and that is great!

I am torn. Orignally, I was the same way. I could weigh in every day, see the day to day fluctuations, but be ok with the downward trend. Typically I'd see a new low number, then it would disappear for a few days, and I'd gradually lose weight until I'd see it for real. That was good for 5 months at least. Then the downward trend stopped. The past few weeks it's been more of a flatline with a couple of peaks. :grumble:

This week, I went on a scale diet, and waited until today to weigh in. The result? Same as last Friday and the Friday before that.. As you pointed out, I have no way of knowing whether or not my weight dipped below that or not. I got my measurements today at the gym, and that helped (I've definitely lost inches - 11 since last month).

So, going forward, I'm not sure what the best strategy is. I think monthly weigh-ins would be ideal, but it's nice having the tangible "reward" (a lower number on the scale), when you're putting in so much effort to losing weight. I'm just not sure I can go from daily reinforcements to monthly.

I WEIGHT IN EVERY DAY SO I KNOW WHAT TO PUT IN THE MACHINE AT THE GYM

SNAP...although its hard one as mostly water fluctuation and the calorie burn is more based around an approximation of lean muscle mass...
