HCG diet concerns

my friend who is in her 80's is currently trying this diet plan. it was suggested to her by her chiropractors office last week when they had a "meeting" for their patients. the hormones and "kits" were offered and a sales presentation ensued. she was taken in by the promises of losing "20 pounds in less than 2 months", according to the chiropractors, both males, who have been on the diet for these past few weeks. they say that men get results more quickly than women. i am very concerned for my friends' health! has anyone here used this plan? what results have you seen if any? should i be concerned? from what i understand the HCG "tricks" your body into "thinking" it's pregnant...????

This sounds incredibly unethical behaviour from a health care professional.. I hope your friend has talked to her doctor to make sure this regime won't cause her any problems.
There are a number of threads about hcg, just search and you'll find lots of info and opinions.
  • I actually tried the hcgdiet and lost about 13 pounds in 3 weeks and have been able to keep the weight off since. It's almost like a detox because of the foods you are limited to.

No way! I can't say I agree with the HCG diet but I go with the "each to their own" approach but when you're talking about an 80 year old lady going to be doing 500 calories I have to question the morals of the pushers...and in this case thats exactly what they are in my opinion! If you know this woman well could you either persuade her to talk to her Dr first or talk to her Dr yourself so they are in the know of what she is about to embark on?

A coworker of mine was on that diet. Thank goodness she did not stick with it. You are only supposed to eat about 500 calories a day on it. HCG is a pregnancy hormone, not sure exactly what it is supposed to do, my opinion is the weight lost comes from starving yourself. Definitely not healthy!

I've heard of this diet, seems pretty dicey to me. I guess I'm leery of anything that restricts your calories or the food you are "allowed" to eat that much. And for and 80 year old woman? I have to agree with the other post, that sounds like taking advantage to me.

exactly my thoughts, how can starving yourself even work well? i have researched this and the body will go into "survival mode" first! hanging onto the fat for dear life...thanks for the reply :))
