ok i'll explain... and please this isnt to offend ANYONE, it just erks me when i see a commercial for something unhealthy and a thin, lean, healthy person eating it! i mean i just watched a commercial for mcdonalds with an attractive guy and girl, thin, eating happily. OR if i see another chocolate commercial with a supermodel eating the chocolate, yes even if its dark chocolate, im going to unplug my tv and never watch again! (ok ok a little overboard) but maybe if there were commercials with overweight people, eating in their cars, alone, then going back for an icecream because they feel so unsattisfied from the crap that they just ate, then felt so sorry that they ate all of that food that they feel helpless alone and depressed. (ya a little long maybe a bit overboard again, but you know what i mean) If the fast food industry really had our best interest (which is quick meals for busy families) then they wouldn't be coming up with triple stacked burgers with triple chocolate shakes. SORRY had to rant for a minute and just get my thoughts out, wow feel a bit better now, btw im looking to become a nutritionist one day, i had been thin for all of my life and never struggled with weight, but when i started to realize that i really wasnt healthy and also gained a few pounds, or 15, in a year, i knew i needed to get on track, (well hello, MFP) i have lost that weight, still struggle from time to time, but i just realized that the reason people are so attracted to these commercials is because they look at something desireable (or someone). but i bet if the roles were reversed people would think twice, just a though, thanks for listening =)

no i totally understand that people who are thin eat fast food too, i eat fast food, everyone eats it from time to time, but obesity is such a huge problem, it would just be nice to show people the big picture. haha and i understand sex sells but it wasnt my point

We can't really blame others for our own personally choices...well unless you are still a kid living at home and your parents buy fast food all the time.

It's just like anything...we have our own individual weaknesses we have to battle...some people it's alcholol...some it's gambling...for some of us it's food. But we still make the choice to walk into the casino...or walk into MacDonalds.

noones gonna buy mcdonalds if its got massive fat people advertising it.
What adverts are true to life? Theyre trying to make their product look good, enticing, and to show that you can still enjoy it and be slim. They exaggerate things to sell their product. Its up to you whether you take it seriously, and unless its actually misleading or lying, then theres not much you can do about it.

Kailey I totally agree with you - I think the fact that FOOD is big business is the biggest f*** up of modern society. Food is the fundamental thing to our survival and we need to do it several times a day. It has the single biggest affect on our health and well being, the way we feel everyday. And yet we learn virtually ZERO about it in our schools (watch Jamie Olivers food revolution if you want to see kids who can't identify what broccoli is!) , and the producers of our food are all out to cut costs and drive sales. Yes eating McDonalds is a personal choice - but we fail to equip people with the information to make those choices and use subversive techniques to encourage them to choose a certain way. For something that is so so so fundamental it just seems wrong - and we wonder why there is an obesity epidemic.

It is business...If their salads were making the big bucks because everyone is buying salads they would advertise and sell tons of salads. It's all about supply and demand. A fast food/ healthy food salad place is NOT going to make it. If you believe that try opening one and test that theory. Sorry if this sounds harsh, I don't mean it to be, I just get tired of people blaming companies for their bad choices. If people did not make those choices those companies would go bankrupt and cease to exist.

I love the commercials from Subway that show people eating burgers and their buttons are popping off and chairs are breaking. Also the commercials where the woman orders something like a low self esteem meal with a side of guilt.

I get what you're saying. but healthy people still have cheat meals every now and then.

I eat clean 6 days a week, and enjoy myself a little on sundays. I may have a few beers once a month, or I may grab a double cheeseburger from McD's every couple months.

They aren't going to put a fat person in a fast food commercial lol

False advertising is what makes the world, I mean, if you open a magazine, are you really going to see a rough picture that was taken with a polaroid? Umm..no. You are going to see pics taken with the most high tech cameras, that have been meticulously gone over with about a 1000 different programs to airbrush and touch up any flaw, bump, hair out of place, etc.
None of it is real, yet so many girls kill themselves trying to accomplish that perfect image....
No one is going to go eat somewhere where they portray what it really does to people....but I am sure that most of us know that if we ate McDonald's every day......well, we would not look like those "skinny" people on the commercials, just as I know when I take a picture with my little digital camera, every flaw will be there.....

thanks for discussing this topic guys, but i dont think i explained myself well and just went on a rant... i dont think fast food is completely horrible, FOR THE KNOWLEDGABLE, like you guys, but for people who really dont know the first thing about what food does to their body and then see ads for decadent things without realizing the consequences of intaking that food. But believe me, i agree with all of you, its the persons own choice. I'm just so thankful that all of us came on MFP to learn and that you understand that what you put in your body means something. Also thankful that there are shows like the biggest loser and the food revolution, to open the veiwers eye when they see a morbidly obese person eating exactlly what they eat on a daily basis, it will make them see the consequences of eating badly. haha and that subway commercial is exactly what i'm talking about lol we need more of those.
I think this hits so close because I have people who I love in my family who really dont understand, and yes maybe don't really want to understand the consequences of what they do to their body and just makes me sad to think that people die from obesity, im not blaming fast food though, i just wish we could have more realistic images... in every facet of life, in a perfect world.... lol
