Hi everyone my name is Wayne and I have been diabetic for the past 9 years, which most of the years my levels would have put most people in a coma. My blood sugars for the past 9 years have hovered between 450 and 600 and within a two week time frame I dropped it to 119 with just a change in my diet. I have managed to maintain for the last 4 months. I'm very proud of myself and I feel so much better. I have decided to make a drastic change in diet and activity so I can be around for my children and to just get healthy and set a better example for my kids.

For the past 4 months I have completely cut candy out and sodas to start, If I have a sweet tooth it's strictly sugar free. Starting today I am going to to control my carbohydrates better and eat more. I know it sounds weird to hear eat more but I believe my body has went into starvation mode over the last 2 weeks. I worked a 14 hour shift at work and only had eaten a small bag of chips the entire day. The last two weeks have been that way. I have been drinking strictly water all day every day. I was worried about the cravings I would have for sweets when I cut them out but honestly it doesn't phase me at all, no cravings and no desire to have that back in my life.

I'm hoping to meet some great people in this community that can help keep me motivated and give me some advice and vice versa, maybe I can help someone out as well with some of my past experiences. Thanks for reading.

Hello Wayne and welcome to MFP!
"Starvation mode" is actually MUCH more common than people realize. An occasional under eating of your required calories will not harm you, but continuously doing so is not smart. Good for you for realizing and learning that for yourself :)
I admire your will power and you cutting out of the sweets/sugar.

I have an incredible sweet tooth, but counting calories ensures that I only indulge in moderation :)

This is a great site w/ some amazing people and tools. Please feel free to ask any questions you have and again, welcome!

I was diagnosed with diabetes February 2010. I was on 4 different medications. I joined MFP and took control of my life by eating healthy and I started exercising. I have lost 65 pounds since then and my doctor has taken me off all diabetic medication. Good Luck in your journey.

Thanks for the comments, it's nice to have people that have been there are encouraging me to keep going. I started my exercise routine this morning and I went for a brisk walk for 3/4 of a mile and ran 1/4 mile. My legs are about to explode. lol.

Wayne, Congratulations to you for taking back your life! I know for myself, I have found the experience to be liberating.

What has really helped me is reading lots of books on healthy eating. There is a lot of information out there and it can be overwhelming. Unltimately, I decided that a well balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, and proteins is what will work for me. Right now I am reading "Thin for Life" by Anne Fletcher. She provides good, sound advice on how maintain weight loss for life.

This is a great website to help you manage your daily meals. Taking the stance that is this is a new way to live is the best approach. The changes we make now are what will allow us to remain healthy for the remainder of our lives.

Best wishes as you move forward on your journey.
